What preservative do you prefer to use in your DIY? I'm leaning towards Optiphen, but just wanted to hear what others prefer to use. |

It seems to be the most common one used. Does it work well in aqueous solutions? I read it might not which is weird.
ETA: ok so apparently optiphen can clump etc. in aqueous solutions and requires an emulsifier and heat. OptiphenND is better for aqueous solutions. Or you can just use Phenoxyethanol for everything instead, and not need an emulsifier or heat. Hmm. It's weird because Kassy's antioxidant spritz used optiphen and it's water based. I'll have to look at the recipe again.
I saw another preservative on bulkactives that was phenoxyethanol combined with something else. I wonder which is better. |

Oh, the recipe just says to mix everything in water and that's it. I wonder why some people say optiphen isn't water soluble. There was no heating or emulsifiers used in that recipe. |

It works in emulsions best:
Formulating Guidelines:
● Optiphen is suitable for anhydrous formulations and emulsions, such as creams, lotions, salves, body butters, and body scrubs.
● Optiphen is not heat sensitive and can be added directly to the formulation with heat. However, Optiphen can destabilize some emulsions so for most emulsions, we recommend that Optiphen be added during POST-emulsification at or below 37.7°C (100°F).
● There are no pH restrictions and it is compatible with most raw materials.
● Optiphen is not very water soluble and is therefor NOT recommended for all water products. For all water products or high surfactant-based sytems, such as toners or floral waters or shampoo or body wash, we recommend Optiphen ND.
INCI Name: Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol
Recommended Use Levels: 0.5% - 1.5%
