Sorry if there are already good threads on this. I'm sure there were some but I'm having trouble searching.

I know people generally use the same products on both face & neck, but am wondering if given the different texture of the skin, we should be treating it differently.

Three or four years ago, it seemed like my neck had visible pores and that kind of textured, horizontal stripey(?) appearance. I hope you know what I mean.. neck skin!

I may have done a couple of mild enzyme peel or yogurt/lemon masks back then, and took to manually exfoliating, and it looks way better now. But I'd like to learn how to maintain it, and am wondering if manual exfoliation (microfibre or bath scrubbie every week) might be too harsh. I'm very gentle with them these days and there doesn't seem to be any irritation.
I also have some of those neck "rings" extending just below (probably within an inch) of my collar bone, which doesn't make sense. Why would it need to extend down there? I'm thin and have a prominent collarbone and defined, slender neck... not sure if that's relevant, but maybe its different for people who are more plump with softer definition.

Can anyone explain the difference between neck skin & face or body skin? It seems very different to me, and perhaps more sensitive.

And do you think mild chemical exfoliation would be more recommended than physical? I was thinking physical might encourage it to be more hardy and resilient, but perhaps it doesn't work that way and I'm doing damage that may not be visible yet.

And if anyone can find those past neck skin threads, please post!

Neck skin tends to be drier than facial skin because there are fewer sebaceous glands; dehydrated/ dry skin can be more sensitive because the barrier is compromised. My neck doesn't have different texture unless it is dehydrated. Is it possible the ring below your collarbone is caused by your bust tissue being pushed upwards, perhaps as you sleep?

I pretty much treat my neck the same as my face, but of course I focus on barrier repair and hydration anyway. I highly recommend exfoliating with dilute lactic acid (humectant, boosts ceramides) and moisturising with products containing lanolin which plumps out the fine vertical 'sleep' lines on my chest. Very Happy

Hmmm... I have normal/oily skin and my neck seems normal. Dry skin seems foreign to me, but you're probably right.

By texture, I mean that if I run my finger upwards, I can feel a bit of bumpiness. Is this not normal? I mean, necks expand and contract and stretch, as we move around all day so I thought maybe the skin was supposed to be like that in order to accomodate. Mine's a little like chicken skin, but not sagging or anything.

And I didn't think my breasts would cause those types of problems since I'm only a b-cup. But you're right, I squished them up, and it causes the crease appearing by my collar bone. I'm a side or stomach sleeper too, yikes!

I had no idea these could all be wrinkles. Sad

Thanks Firefox, I'll assume that your hunches are correct and take your advice. I recently got the 88% lactic but haven't used it yet. Glad that I asked sooner rather than later!

Mine neck feels slightly different running my fingers up than down, but that is only really noticeable when it needs exfoliating. Hopefully others will post and confirm or deny whether their neck is the same! Laughing

Firefox says it best by treating your neck the same as your face; no need to buy special neck creams or treatments. Skin loving ingredients are what is needed.

Agreed. In fact I read somewhere recently that one of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to fight ageing is to treat only their face with a proper skincare regime. This ultimately leads to peoples necks looking older than their faces.

I have had Titan laser treatment done and it works wonderfully well on my neck. It got rid of my double chin, also. It is pricey but no topical or exfoliant worked anymore. (I was paying $150 a jar for Shiseido LX cream which helped the texture but not the sagging skin.)

The skin on my neck looks good. Creamy and smooth. The only problem is, there's too much of it!

Good to have seen your replies... the possibility of my neck returning to the state of the rest of the skin is kind of exciting!

I tried the lactic acid at 44% last night, but haven't noticed any difference. I'll keep trying every few days, and maybe throw in some ocm massage. Looks like the area's just a little congested.

I do use all my products on both face and neck also, and the massage I feel helps keep all skin plump and firm. JMHO Smile

Yes, I've definitely been neglecting the area. I have been applying sunscreen on my chest, but that's about it.

I tried to do ocm and apply product on the area before, but find the area very sensitive and a total hassle. The darn collar & jawbones are so awkward - its like banging between them and massaging bone instead of flesh! Not to mention cutting off my windpipe as I do my throat... getting cold after stripping so as not to mess up my clothes... sigh.
I'll try and find a way to take it easy and enjoy it.

Sounds good Lori! Thats what I do except I use an AHA 8%, my neck is sensitive anyway. I do this about twice a week at night to keep it smooth.

Can you use your rgular body lotion on your neck as well?

Or would it be more advisable to use your facial lotion (versus body lotion) on the neck?

IMO whichever contains more proven moisturising ingredients. Maybe try both and see which your neck seems to prefer?

I just use all my facial products right down on to the neck and get all the actives I need to keep the skin looking great! Smile
