It's now been 4 months since my last period and, aside from some mild hot flashes, it's not too bad. But one strange thing I've noticed is that around the time my period would be due, I get some mild period-like cramps. They don't last long, maybe an hour or so.
Is this normal? Did my uterus not get the memo from my ovaries that it's time to close up shop? |

Nothing will be 'normal' as you know it for a long time. Expect the unexpected and recognize this is the new normal. You could get a period next month like nothing ever changed and then be back on four months of no periods. With cramps, without cramps, hot flashes mild, hot flashes wild. My friends and I have discussed it all and noone is the same. |

Say it ain't so, sister!
So, is there no truth then in symptoms being similar to you mother's and aunt's? It's ever man (or woman) for themselves? |

A lot of family member's I know go down same path! But, But, depending on rather all had same type of periods to start with. Ie. if all your life you and your mom were same, you'll prob be like her. If on the other hand, one had horrible periods and yours were fine, easy, normal. Then all bets off. At least this is general consensus of those I know. But always a curve ball everywhere. |

It also depends on a lot of other factors, one of which is how much estrogen etc. your body is still producing.
I am very sorry to say most older women (in their sixties and seventies) I know still suffer from hot flushes, night sweats et cetera. I fear for some, if not most, women 'menopause' is a lifetime thing. And it's so VERY weird that most textbooks suggest it's all over after a year or two, that just isn't true. |

Well, I guess I'd have to talk to my mother about how severe her cramps were before she had kids. Like I said, mine were killer until I had my first child at 28 years old. My mom had her first child at 22 years old, so I don't know if she had killer cramps before then.
I do know that all the women in our family got our periods at 11 years old and went into menopause right before turning 50. Neither my mom nor my aunts had hot flashes or night sweats, so I'm really hoping I'll follow suit. Oddly, for the past few days, I haven't experienced them...maybe a couple at most.
Tiny, don't fret to much. It doesn't mean we are destined for years of hot flashes. We might get lucky and this will pass in a year or so. |

let us know what you find out, my periods changed when I turned 28, then back to super light at 40, but turns out so did my mom. Wish I could follow her course but she had a hysterectomy at 42. I know 2 yrs of these would be a gift, but OMG they are as if you suddenly have 104 fever out of nowhere! |

Does your mom have any sisters you could ask?
I will let you know tomorrow what my mom says. I'm going to see her tonight. |

All of my mother's side of the family, the women didn't have issues with hot flashes...I thought I would be the same....not so ! There is a difference between me and the rest of the women of my family...they were all petite but somewhat heavy, I am petite, slim and small busted. My doctor said if I wasn't slim I would have more estrogen stored in the fat to help me out. |

Good news for me! At least my fat is doing something for me. Seriously, though, I don't know how true that is because I remember having a customer when I did nails that was very obese and the hot flashes this woman would have! Lordy...I thought she was going to pass out!!
I did see my mom tonight and asked if she had bad cramps like I did before she had us kids and she said, "Oh, yeah, really bad cramps." So, if there is any truth to your symptoms being similar to your mothers, that's good to hear for me. |
