I have been depressed over the last 5 months. I started using my wifes Benzoyl Peroxide 10% in march of this year and things went bad quickly. I don't even have acne. My face feels like its on fire, its rough, open pores, diminished facial fat. Can this really do this? I did not use it often, but when I did I use a clairsonic. I went to the Derm, who suggested getting a microdermabrasion, I think this matters worse. My skin feels dead and it hurts. Did this cause permanent damage? Can it be reversed? I am a 33 yr old male, who never had skin problems until this (just some crows feet). Can I get healthy smooth skin again. I am so desperate. Currently using cetaphil cleanser, emu oil, cereve lotion, and hydrocortisone lotion 0.1%. Thanks.
PS I do smoke a little bit |

Why did you start using bezoyl peroxide if you don’t even have acne? It sounds like you have really irritated your skin and so you probably need to rest up. BP isn’t the best thing to be using, and especially not at 10% that’s quite high. I think you can heal things up but you need to go much slowly and carefully.
I am guessing your derm suggested the microdermabrasion to stimulate the skin to start repairing and growing again (which it will do). However you need to give it some time and careful thought. Cereve is great, but how does your skin feel with emu oil. I love emu oil and suffer from dry skin, but my sons hate it. They’ve got their father’s oily complexions though so they need a lighter oil. Why are you using hydrocortisone lotion if you haven’t any skin problems? It might be better off to start out with the pure basics like cleansing, moisturising and wearing sun protection. Smoking isn’t supposed to be the best thing but hey we all have our vices but as long as you are doing the right things you should be fine.
Maybe you want to be using something containing Vitamin C which will help your skin repair faster too? |

Thank you. I forgot to mention that I was upset at the first dermatologist for giving microderm on already damaged skin, so I got a second opinion. He put me on Hydrocortisone for 3 weeks. |

Also, can drying out my face actually open up all my pores? I read that once you open them, they stay that way. My face is so dull now and I have holes alll over my face, this sucks. I feel like I ruined my life in a matter of months. |

So are you still on the hydro?
Its nonsense what you read about pores half the time, all fiction. Pores aren't like windows, they don't open and close without reason. Sounds like your skin has got dehydrated for a variety of reasons, so I think using a moisturising oil and some Vit C should really help your skin get healthy and fit again. Also speak to your derms, tell them you are unhappy. They may have other things to tell you or advise you to use that will turn your skin around. Skin is a living, breathing organ after all, so you can most definitely get it back on track.

Hydro for one more week. Emu is helping a little bit (my idea). It's only been one day, but I just bought some biafine act and in 10 seconds, I felt 80% better. I still look like crap, but at this point inflammation is priority 1. I absolutely can't thank you enough, I have been so distraught for months. You give me hope. It goes a long way. I will get my face back, time and patience. |
