Hi All

New poster here - stumbled across this forum doing an internet search looking for some advice about my recent eye test results. Thought i'd post my problem and see if some kind soul replies! Wink

I recently had a check-up at my local optician. I don't have a problem with my eyesight but thought i should have a check.

After the sight test, the optician said i should have glasses for distance, for tv and stuff. I went home with the prescription, but am not sure i do need glasses - i have no problem seeing anything that i need to.

The prescription i have is this:

Right eye:
Sphere -0.75
Cylinder -0.5
Axis 180

Left eye:
Sphere -1.00
Cylinder -0.25
Axis 180

Is this good or bad? When I asked my friends who had glasses they all had higher prescriptions than I did, around -3, so I am not so convinced I need glasses. I am under the impression the closer you are to sphere 0.00 the better vision you have, and I am fairly close to that compared to my friends and I am sure I have reasonable vision, nothing is blurry anyway.

But the optician is saying i need glasses? I'm not sure if she is saying that just to get the sale.. I can't really afford to buy glasses unless my eyes really need them.

Many Thanks for any advice.

Josh

Though your vision is close to perfect, the fact that they are not 100% suggests that your eyes may be straining slightly, but not so that you notice. Getting glasses now will prevent your eyes and vision from worsening in the future. Smile

Actually I have heard the opposite, if you get glasses your eyes will get worse even faster in the long run because your eyes become dependent on them. Then you start that cycle of having to get a higher prescription every year.
Sometimes certain diet changes and eye exercises to relax the eyes can actually help your vision get better slightly if it is not too far from 20/20. Do some research and you will find many interesting alternatives.

Hi,Josh here Question

Your replies give conflicting advice. One of you says to get glasses to stop my eyesight without glasses from getting worse, and one of you says that getting glasses will make your eyesight without glasses worse. So who is right?????

I am completely clueless here Question

Also what are these "interesting alternatives" you were talking about? Eye exercises??? Never heard of them before. Special diet changes??? Please tell me more.

Please I need more people to answer because I've got conflicting advice and I don't know what to do.

Please help.

Research online. One example would be to do a search for Dr. W.H. Bates.

Dr. Bates was a doctor who discovered and wrote about ways to help people improve their sight. The Bates Method.

Here is also a website I just came across that has some free PDF downloads too:

OK I googled about it and found many different opinions on the subject and questions asked on it such as "do they work" and "what is the best method". There really are sooooooooooo many different opinons on this topic, I I still don't know whether to try some of this stuff out or just get glasses or go without.

Ohhhhhhhhh...... I don't know what to dooooooooo... I don't know what to dooooooooo...

Many people get glasses and soon need stronger glasses. So no, wearing glasses won't prevent your eyesight from getting worse.

On the other hand, many people in your position don't get glasses, and eventually their vision gets bad enough that there's little choice. Whatever you do, your vision could get worse.

If you do get glasses, only use them for distance viewing. Take them off when you use the computer or read a book. You don't want to over-correct, as that could make your nearsightedness progress faster.

If you drive, especially at night, then you should probably wear glasses for that. Otherwise, at this point glasses would seem to be unnecessary. You say you can see what you need to, and money is an issue.

If you want to try to improve your vision, spend time looking into the distance (without glasses), and notice details. Pay attention to small points. Bates talked about "central fixation".

Regardless of what you want to do about the glasses, taking an Eye Vitamin like OcuPlus will help your general eye health and hopefully prevent degeneration.
