| For personal reasons, I'd really rather not buy vodka, so I'm wondering how many of you needed it to dissolve Ferulic acid and how many of you found witch hazel worked just as well. Also, would rubbing alcohol not work? |

Ellaelise, you arent the only one who objects to buying/using alcohol. However, some of the hand sanitizers are made of methanol and thats a viable alternative. Just make sure there are no other ingredients like fillers/fragrances/acetone in it.
No, "rubbing alcohol" (isopropyl) is quite drying. I would not use it on my face.
Or you could use a dilute sodium hydroxide in water solution to dissolve the ferulic:
"Solubility: Ethanol, non- denatured alcohol, propylene glycol, alkaline solution"

But really, its not rocket surgery ... just do the best you can with what you've got! You can leave the ferulic out if its too much bother. |

I couldn't post links at the time, and was too lazy to go and reread it. It basically said to not bother with actives that require alcohol as a solvent if you don't want to use alcohol. It recommends non-denatured ethenol, or grain alcohol, besides vodka.

LOL Everytime I look at this thread in the forum queue I think: "I don't NEED vodka to dissolve ferulic acid. I just NEED vodka". :8

You can easily solubize FA in a little propylene glycol. Or as Fawnie suggested, 'just leave it out.'
I haven't used it in ages, and can't really find a reason to miss it.
Several nice oils have a nice concentration of FA, so you could always get a bit of FA that way.. Rice Bran Oil is one nice option. |

But if you used the rice bran oil, wouldn't that make your serum occlusive, and not good to use with the AALS? |

I never use occlusive ingredients with my LED...And for a long while, I've just done bare faced treatments, and leave the topicals for afterward. The above was just addressing how to solubize FA in vitamin C serum. |
