I'm having a difficult time dissolving salicylic acid in alcohol. I weighed out 2 gram of SA and then added 10ml of alcohol (Smirnoff 37,5 %). After a short time of stirring vigorously absolutely nothing of the powder dissolved. DragoN specifically said the toner will have crystals hanging around, but I'm pretty sure some of the SA is meant to dissolve. Does anyone have any idea what went wrong? is 37,5 % to low? Could I use rubbing alcohol instead which consist of 75 % ethanol and Propan-2-ol? The modified recipe is below. Thanks for any tips!
2g salicylic acid
10ml alcohol
90ml distilled water |

I dunno. I never made an SA toner, but there is a water soluble salicylic acid powder now that might be easier:
Disclaimer: I dont own, work for, or receive gratuities from SEA, but I buy from them! |
I like SEA, I've bought from them before
But how can that be SA when normal SA is poorly soluble in water? And I think I'd like to use up what I already bought first, but I will definitely keep the water soluble SA in mind for future purchase! Thank you Fawnie. |

I understand not wanting to waste things!
You might try using ethanol (EverClear from liquor store or lab ethanol 99% pure). Vodka has more water than alcohol so it prob isnt very effective as a solvent.
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) isnt a very good thing on skin. It has chemicals in it that arent nice to skin of the face. |

After contacting various companies one of them suggested I use rectified alcohol with 1,5 % Methyl isobutyl ketone and 1 % Methyl ethyl ketone. Does anyone know if this is safe for topical application?
I tried dissolving a small amount of SA in it and it worked! So this definitely has enough alcohol percentage. |

Chris, try to find Spirytus Wesoly at your local liquor store, it's 96% grain alcohol ( 192 Proof !) ... This is what I use to dissolve all my skincare actives which need alcohol...
pls dont use rubbing or denatured alcohol, to render it undrinkable they put poison in it! |

on 2nd thought, you can still use this smirnoff u have, n since ur using water anyways, just reduce the % of water n increase the % of alcohol.. u ll just have to do some calculations... rough estimate would be to use 3 times 10 ml alcohol i.e 30ml or 30% in this case( if ur smirnoff contains 35% alcohol) so the total % of alcohol in ur toner will be around 10.... n less water accordingly so 68% water..
( your smirnoff has 35% alcohol and rest ( almost all) is water )
I would dissolve SA in alcohol first n then add this mix to rest of your water... |

Hey Daler,
The problem is that here in Norway we can't get a hold of anything stronger then 60 % at the liquor store without a license. But I will try what you said in the other post.
Thanks for the help. |
