Some companies, which put literally all their pre-made products in jars, have some really nice antioxidants in their products. However, what level of degradation do these actives experience when opened and in use? I know there is a lot of controversy over the effect of jar packaging but it seems "better safe than sorry" is a worthy adage in this case.

More specifically, if I bought the Skin Actives cream and transferred it to an airless pump bottle would there be any negative effect? What are all your opinions on this?

Hi Fawnie, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. Yes, the products from skin actives do have preservatives (some parabens, some not). I was under the impression that preservatives protect from mold and bacteria, and not necessarily antioxidants? Please correct me if I'm wrong... Thanks Smile

I prefer to use products that dont contain harmful parabens and questionable preservatives. Phenoxyethanol is a safe one tho. If you add anything to a base cream that already has a preservative you still need to add more to cover the additional ingredients as it throws the % off.

Preservatives protect against microbes, yes, but not against oxidation caused by air, light and heat. You might try using an airless pump jar to minimize exposure to air as some creams are too thick to go thru an airless pump bottle:

There are some derivatives and provitamins that are ok for quite a while when exposed to air (tocopheryl acetate comes to mind) but a lot of 'active' antioxidants and plant extracts need to be in opaque, airless pumps to protect them.

Generally speaking, the brand has to consider the container, the use of the container must be suitable.
