I am a 24 yo female. Its been a few years since I haven't had a period. It all started from my running years in high school and my body has not recovered since. I know it is very unhealthy, and I have seen countless gynecologist and endocrinologist with only one solution:

Some form of birth control or hormone replacement. I don't want to go down that route, as I am trying a holistic approach (herbs and acupuncture, healthy diet, moderate exercise). My biggest fear with hormones is that my body will depend on them forever, and that little hormones I am making will go away.

I am hoping my body will heal itself and start producing its own hormones. Along with a million dangers such as bone thinning and endometrial cancer, I am afraid my skin will age prematurely as hormones play a big role.

What are your thoughts on hormones and aging? Should I just bite the bullet and start taking hormones (probably until menopause)

I've heard that there are women who never get their periods, some of them even have children, and are perfectly healthy. As long as your doctor thinks your healthy, is it really necessary to worry about?...I mean...that's kinda awesome.

I wish that was the case. I don't think it would be healthy to have the lining build up for so long, at least that's what the doctors have told me so far.

It amazes me how quick they are to prescribe synthetic hormones, only to mask the symptoms without going to the root of the problem.

What should I do? I am having some breakouts now on my chin, probably due to the hormonal imbalance.

Is your BMI normal? Or are you still too lean?

Yes, BMI is ~23, and not lean at ALL!!! I thought gaining all this fat padding would help, but nothing yet.

I think that you used to run is most likely a coincidence.
I know a few women (including me) with a similar issue.
We've all had blood tests, brain scans and ultrasounds and nothing sinister is the cause.

The Dr's have all said the cause of the endocrine dysfunction is pretty much impossible to determine in the absence of pituitary or ovarian tumors. But it is important to try an normalize the hormone levels otherwise you face an increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiac disease.

In a nutshell, make sure you've been investigated for pituitary tumors, ovarian tumors and PCOS. If you've already done that your options are to (a). Do nothing, (b). Take the pill, (c). Alternative therapy.

Unless you normalize your hormone levels you'll encounter the same health issues that accompany menopause, including skin thinning, loss of elasticity etc.

The pill works well for me and when I wanted to get pregnant I took Clomid to induce ovulation. I tried herbal medicine and acupuncture and it didn't help.

Sounds like me, have done all the MRIs and ultrasounds in the world. Nothing that can indicate something else other than hypothalamic amenorrhea. Basically the brain is not sending the right signals to the ovaries. Ballerina are you planning to take the pill until menopause? That sounds scary to depend on synthetic hormones for 20+ years!

But it just might be the only way out of this mess.

I'm really not concerned about taking the pill or hormone replacement. The benefits far outweigh the risks.
It can take a few goes to find a pill that suits you, but other than that it's smooth sailing.
People take medication for all sorts of reasons.
I actually think we are really lucky to live in an era where issues like this can be managed so easily.

Good luck.

I used to feel the same way, but now I wish I hadn't read all that scare material about it and maybe tried it at least for a few months, doesn't have to be the rest of your life. I've found something that seems to have balanced my hormones a little, though it's still early, but I've noticed some results.

Diet and exercise alone will not balance hornmones, I kept thinking if I stick to that it would work out but its really not enough. If you want to try herbs, there's an ayurvedic herb blend called Shatavari that is supposed to help with menstrual issues and fertility.

I had very scattered periods - often none for long periods (5-6 months) and became somewhat regular after I had my first baby at 30. That event seemed to kick my cycle up a notch. The second baby - helped even more.
They wanted to put me on birth control pills to regulate and Iwouldn't do it.
If you decide on hormones I would not use premarine or the ilk.

Thank you all for your replies. It helps a lot as I am trying to decide what to do.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the ilk?
And wishful thinking, what are you currently taking to balance your hormones?

I've been drinking spearmint tea and it's really helped clear up stubborn chin acne, it's only been over a month, not completely clear but close, never had it look this good in a long time. Not sure that would work in your case.
