There's quite a few topical Vit A options: just wondering if people have a preference for Retinaldehyde vs. Tretinoin vs. Retinoic Acid vs. A-Ret? Are these all much of a muchness or is one suitable for a slightly difference thing?

Thanks for your help!

Apologies for my ignorance: still learning about this! Just found out that Retinoic Acid is the non-topical form of Tretinoin, which is just another name for Retin-A. *Eye roll at myself*

Part of my original question still stands though! Anyone using Retinaldehyde versus Retin A, and if so, do you like it?

Whatever your skin is fine with! Retinal (retinaldehyde) didn't impress me that much, I started out on tretinoin, retinol and adapalene and after those highly effective forms retinal seemed like a step back in terms of results and it seems crazy expensive for the amount you get it seems which means the value vs result is a bit unbalanced. On the other hand if someone has never used any worthwhile vit. A products and/or has sensitive skin then retinal could be a good place to start.
My favorite form is retinol, makes my skin look best. Sometimes I get a tube of tretinoin (because to me it costs 10x less than retinol) and while it works, but skin doesn't have that weil of clarity that I get from retinol.
If you can, maybe try out each one for a couple months to see how your skin responds?

I am personally much happier not using Retin A....it was just too irritating for me.

Here is another great article on the types of Vit A.

And one more....

Great links, Bethany and Cookie. After reading Dr. Pugliese's article, I am curious if anyone has ever tried the Circadia Night Time Replair Plus product (or any of his products).

This is the ingredient list for the Night Time Repair Plus:

INGREDIENTS: Deionized Water, Glyceryl Sterate & PEG-100 Stearate & PEG-100 stearate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Isopropyl Palmitate, jojoba (Buxus Chinensis) Oil (Emollient Moisturizing), Cetyl Alcohol, Steareth 10, Oat Protein Powder (Avena Sativa)(Antioxidant), dimethicone. Propylene Glycol, Lipoic Acid, L-Tyrosine, Oligomeric ProanthoCyanidins, Linoleic Ester, Vitamin A Acetate (Regenerative Antioxidant), Vitamin E Acetate(Antioxidant Moisturizing), Diazolidinyl Yrea, dl-Tocopherol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Stabilizes Vitamin E Antioxidant), Ursolic Acid, genistein, Polypeptide-5, Methylparaben, Beta Glucan (Immune Stimulant Activates The Natural Repair System), Retinol (Regenerative Antioxidant), Fragrance, Propylparaben, Thyroxine.

I wonder if this compares to Environ, as it is quite a bit less expensive.

I vote for Retin A, I find all other weak forms of Vitamin A useless. One just has to find a way of reducing irritation from using Retin A frequently.

Hmmm...I might try using it once a week followed by the anti-inflammatory moisturizer I am using. Maybe that will help.

Dr. Pugliese gave a presentation on inflammation at the recent skincare conference...I believe it was open to the public so I can probably attach the document, once I find where I filed it.

Thank you so much for the info, guys!

Those articles were all really helpful. I guess I'm still nervous about retin A as it's difficult to imagine what the skin will look like "after the peel"... Myabe I'll try it on my hands first...

BFG - I look forward to reading the article on inflammation!

For me, Skinceuticals Retinol 1.0 beats everything else by a a few miles. Not sure whether it's the delivery system or the presence of other actives in the product, but I like it above anything else so far. Besides the improved skin tone it also keeps skin clear better than tretinoin and with less side effects (slightly more efficient at preventing blackheads and breakouts). It's actually one of the few topical products where I can't think of any drawbacks or negatives, not one thing, especially since they changed to tube packaging. Laughing

And for extra dose of vit. A I use Apeel Correct from Perfect Complexion. I'm a bit inconsistent with it since the downtime isn't always compatible with my schedule, but I certainly like the result. Apeel makes skin peel BAD; I leave it on overnight, which is a bit against the instructions. Tried the other products in Apeel line: the 2.0 was a bit of a let-down and the weaker versions don't come close to Skinceaticals' product, but the original Apeel Correct is a keeper.

Both options are not really for someone who's never tried any retinoids, they are both very potent and it's best to start out slowly. Otherwise it will hurt, literally. Everyone's different, obviously, but it took me years to work up to nightly use and even now there are times when I take a night off.

Woah... I bought an assortment, but take FOREVER to use them up so I find they're hardly touched before they probably expire. It never even occurred to me that another type could make even MORE of a difference than it already has!

Jazzi, could you tell us what other retinol products you've used? Any comparison to PTR Retinol Fusion PM, Perricone HPEV or any other product?
Thank you!

Just an FYI that my sister has had really good luck with the DermaDoctor Poetry in Lotion retinol product. It definitely packs a punch, but was a bit too aggressive for me.

I use a mixture, of NCN all trans retinol 2% with non prescription tretoinin, with a squirt of Avene Eulage(retinal).

I have never had any irritation at all hoping eventually to upgrade to prescription tretonin at some point Rolling Eyes

But this mix seems to work for me just now.
