I used to use hydroquinone years ago on the backs of my hands and it worked but the spots eventually came back even though I always use sunscreen. I have coworkers who got a special laser treatment, wound up with very dark spots that flaked off in about two weeks. Do those spots treated with laser also return? Is the brown spot hidden under the skin and eventually makes its way out again no matter how you get rid of it?
If that is the case, I'll just bleach them every so often because it's cheaper. |

Those spots are likely from sun damage. The cells that produce melanin have been changed through exposure, and now they make pigment in a more excellerated manner. I have somewhat the same problem, and I have found that with each ReAura round the spots disappear, but the really badly damaged areas do seem to get pigmented again - though not as much. And some spots disappear permanently.
I have given this some thought and have decided that as the laser is actually causing tiny cores of tissue to be replaced, probably over time it will help my deeper layers of skin return to normal function and health.
That's really the bottom line for me - health of the skin - 'course it's also nice to look good!
For smaller spots I have successfully used wart remover (17% salycitic acid) to erase pigment, even in areas too close to the eye for IPL.
Worth a try and cheap. |

Interesting idea about using wart remover. There is a freezing wart remover that I've used in the past for slightly raised growths. My derm froze them off and charged me a fortune so I figured I could do it myself and I did.
I'd like to try the cheapest ways first before shelling out money for a laser. I need to save money for filler. |

IPL works well for brown spots but doing something at home will be much cheaper. |

Depends on what caused the brown spots. I had a dark brown spot the size of dime and got it lasered off a decade ago and it has been slowly reemerging like small dots over the area. But for a good eight years it was totally gone.
For melasma patches, I heard that certain lasers can exacerbate melasma so you need to be careful and know exactly what caused the hyperpigmentation as well as the type of laser being used.
At the same time, I had IPL for broken caplillaries. The doctor said IPL is not that effective for hyperpigmentation and that lasers are better. Maybe IPL has changed nowadays but that is what I have read.
If I calculate the cost of Obagi versus one-time laser treatment, laser ends up being cheaper in the long run over a decade or so. |
