Hi, everyone! Smile

My hair is currently dyed at a level 4 (dark brown), I'd like to add some dimension to my hair using lowlights.

I was just wondering what the process of this would be?

Is it: Bleach desired pieces of hair then dye with level 6?

Or do I have to add a red before the L6?

I have heard about hair turning green for some reason, but I only want to lift to orange rather than yellow or white before dyeing, I want the lowlights to be subtle, just a lighter brown.

Any help would be really appreciated! Smile

I thought lowlights meant making your hair darker in places, while highlights meant making hair lighter?

So if you are going from a level 4 to a 6, I am pretty sure that would be adding highlights and lightening your hair in places. I am only clarifying, as I wouldn't want you to look up incorrect info online.

You should be able to use any hair color that lifts (lightens) a bit...you do not need to bleach it out and add color back in.

Ah, sorry! I am an idiot... Smile

I guess I do mean highlights! Just very subtle.

I didn't think you could use a color with a lift on dyed hair, I have a 20vol developer so that's good. Thanks, makes everything much easier! Smile

Bleach to lighten, then you have to fill because you will probably pull either red or orange depending upon your ethnicity. At a level 4 you'll probably pull red.. you'll need to tone with an ash or blue. I for one cannot just lighten and go, because I can't stand red in my hair. I need to balance that with another color. People that miss this step just look unfinished to me.
You cannot lift already dyed hair as you would virgin hair. The rules change. Best results get the color off. I learned a lot from killerstrands.com , I am on a hair dye kick tonight and have already posted in a similar discussion. Huge fan of their mission and site.

Milly, what colour is your hair under the block colour you have added?
