I have been using a petrolatum based cream. It's erno laszlo active phelityl for severely dry skin and it has a vaseline like look and feel on the skin because it's main ingredient is petrolatum. I have been able to tolerate perfumed substances (this cream has some perfume) on my face but I don't think I had yet tried vaseline/petrolatum on my face, but have used on my neck before for a few days with no reaction. Anyway, I seem to be getting a few small pink zits and I have no idea what is causing it, if it's the cream...or my new argan cleansing oil by josie maran. I cannot find anywhere a definitive answer as to whether petrolatum is pore clogging or not. There is mixed information online. I feel I can trust people on this forum to tell me what they think, do you think petrolatum can clog pores and create break outs? Or it must be some other ingredient in the cream causing issues?

I know some people hail vaseline and makeup artists often notice women who use petrolatum have softer skin. I know of someone who uses petrolatum/mineral oil and has amazing skin at the age of 70. I personally have noticed an improvement in wrinkles in a matter of days.

I see you are still trying to sort out your problem, and am glad you are getting some good advice here.
I thought I would give my two cents on this one:
I am not a fan of petrolatum, I have no doubt at all it clogs up the pores and causes breakouts.
Its a barrier cream: any sweat or oil trying to get out is locked in, any actives in your products are locked out.
Don't be fooled by the cost of a product, it doesn't make it more effective; this product is just hopped up vaseline.

Petroleum works wonders for the right kind of skin, but both petroleum and argan can cause breakouts if you are prone to them.

I would stop both products, wait for your face to fully clear up, and then then introduce one at a time. Give it 2 weeks before you add the other one.

Are you rinsing all the oil from your cleanser off your face? Some people (I am one) cannot tolerate the oil cleansers. As soon as I start, I start breaking out. I agree with Bethany, stop both products and once you skin has cleared up, use 1 at a time to see how you react.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I will take a break and then re-introduce, that's a good idea.

BillyBob, thank you for all your advice, I am definitely still trying to sort my problem. I cannot seem to exfoliate, my facial skin does not seem to enjoy any kind of exfoliation, so I'm trying to figure ways to get rid of these bumps all over my face. My skin has been getting very dry from the argan cleanser so I need a good moisture product, but my skin has issues with moisturizer as well. It's so tough finding things for my skin :-/

I agree with Bethanny, stop both products and introduce one at a time. I know there are a lot of people who don't like petroleum based products but a dermatologist I consulted, who is listed as one of the best in the Washington DC area, told me to use vaseline on my dry cracked hands and cuticles. He said vaseline is still the best moisturizer out there. So if he recommends it for my hands, what about the face? Also, someone commented just the other day on QVC's Beauty Banter that her parent had used vaseline on their face and now at an advanced age of 80 or so, did not have any wrinkling or lines. So now I'm trying it on my 11's to see if it softens up. But it could be either product that is causing the breakout.

Debb, I agree with the dermatologist. Many dermatologists say petrolatum is good and I have seen a wrinkle under my eye look so much better in a week of using petrolatum based cream, idk how it has a bad rap....perhaps mineral oil is a cheap not good version and that causes confusion? Maybe it's best to stick to products that say petrolatum and not mineral oil listed in ingredients. But anyway, to update anyone interested, I stopped the argan cleanser and continued with using my old gentle cleanser and then continued using the petrolatum based cream for many days now with no new zits formed. So I assume it was the cleanser? Or maybe the combination of the cleanser and then applying the occlusive cream over it was trapping residual oils from the cleanser in my skin which resulted in break outs? I'm kind of confused about this cause it seems when I used the cleanser alone for two days I didn't get any break outs before I introduced the cream. So I suppose it matters what you place under an occlusive like petrolatum cause you are trapping that stuff to your skin?

I didnt buy the Josie Maran cleansing oil because it had some irritating ingredients like citrus oils.

For gentle exfoliation you can try the konjac sponge. They have them at Sephora now, they are an Asian product butwww.saje.ca also carries them.

I got mine at a health show, Eternal Concepts I believe was the company and I loved them!

They are jellyish cellulose sponge that you soak in water to expand and use to wash your face. I got addicted to them! They are so gentle and clean as well but for morning use only or after cleaning off your makeup. It will not remove makeup. You also have to let them dry properly or they get mildewed. You can boil them to kill the germs. I never found a good way to let them dry properly so I stopped using them. I'll start again though.
