I bought some CSS Vit CE Ferulic back in November 2013. I decanted the contents into a black (plastic) airless pump bottle which I then used for about 2 months. I kept the serum in the fridge and probably used it 3-4x a week. There after it was relegated to the back of my fridge.

Fast forward another 4 months or so and cleaning out my fridge I find the decanted bottle. There still appeared to be a ton left so out of curiosity I decided to pump some onto my hand to see what the serum looks like oxidised - NO CHANGE.....still as clear as water...

So I am somewhat confused and want to find out if anyone else on the forum has had this experience with CSS serum. I am really confused as to why there has been no oxidation.

Is it possible that the fact the serum was placed in an airless pump and refrigerated could have stopped oxidation completely? I have previously bought skinceuticals and had oxidation after 1 month so this comes as a shock..... Shock

Its not a mystery at all. Since ascorbic acid oxidizes in the presence of heat, air and light, placing the airless pump bottle in the dark recesses of a refrig retarded the oxidation. That would happen with any product prone to oxidation.

I think SkinCeuticals packages theirs in those amber glass vials that arent airless right?

Thanks Fawnie, I was just confused as the bottle was opened (and decanted) 5 months ago and my reading/ researching on the forum had me believe that 2-3 months would be a reasonable amount of usage time.

Re skinceuticals yes they keep their product in amber bottles.

I guess the impt questions is when I go to buy a new batch does that mean that I could potentially get 3-4 months usage out of the new bottle?

In any case I intent to test my current bottle fully by exposing it to air to watch for signs of oxidation.

Your product is in a carrier that contains a significant amount of propylene glycol + butylene glycol. These ingredients are what is responsible for keeping your L-Ascorbic Acid stable.

Protection from heat, air and light furthers the stability of L-AA.
