VITAMIN A, C (20%) + RETINYL (1%) + E (1%) SERUM 4/5/10

1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid (15%)
1.5 ml/cc THDA (5%) Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate
.3 ml/cc Vitamin E Oil
.3 ml/cc Retinyl Palmitate
1/2 tsp Grapeseed Oil
3 or 4 drops of Tangerine Essential Oil
*3 tsp "Skin Gel"
1/16th tsp Disodium EDTA
2 tsp Distilled Water (warmed)

Okay, I made this serum and loved it for the first couple of days. Then I noticed my chest was breaking out in red bumps, not itchy but I ended up covered. I think since my skin is sensitive and I'm not used to vitamin c or retinyl products right now this could be the reason. I'm not a stanger to tretinoin or retinyl products but couldn't use them while pregnant. I'm thinking I should try a 10 or 15% C and reduce the retinyl. So could I do this:

1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid (15%)
1.5 ml/cc THDA (5%) Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate
.3 ml/cc Vitamin E Oil
.3 ml/cc Retinyl Palmitate
1/2 tsp (mix of cocunut, macadamia and virgin palm oils from tropical traditions)
*3 tsp "Skin Gel"
1/16th tsp Disodium EDTA
3 tsp Distilled Water (warmed)

If I reduce the retinyl palmitate would i need to increase the oils or because i increased the water could i leave as is and reduce the retinyl palmitate in half?

TiA!

Seems that nobody on this forum is interested in vitamin c recipes anymore which is disappointing since there are so many wonderful versions here and knowledge! I'm thinking if I simplify my questions above maybe I'll get a few responses.

Two questions: if I decrease the amount of retinyl palm do I need to increase anything else? Also for a 15% c do I just increase the amount of water from 2 tsp to 3 tsp? Any help is so appreciated! This stuff is so wonderful for your skin I can't imagine all the passionate posters have left the site for good! Sad

If you reduce the amount of anything in your mix, you should increase something to offset it. Just be aware that changes in one ingredient will change the percentage of actives.

For example, if you increase the water to reduce the percentage of Vit C, you've also reduced the percentage of retinyl.

I suggest you google "batch calculator". I don't have my URL handy for it. This will help you effectively adjust the percentages appropriately.

I can't personally comment on your proposed recipe. I use vit c and retinol at different times of the day and in different products.

Right now, the only things I make consistently are Vitamin C serums and oil mixes. I use a variation of Kassys recipe with L-AA and tetra C. In the past I've made a number of things: matrixyl serum in HA, niacinamide serum, lactic acid lotion and even sunscreen.

In recent months I've backed off making my own stuff (no real reason, just got busy/lazy Razz ). I'm enjoying purchased products from small vendors who use good actives and few unnecessary filler ingredients.
