I have had a mysterious, painful and frustrating problem for over a year! I have hard, raised bumpy ridges under my skin. They are in the area between my lip and chin, along both jawbones on and 2 are on my right cheek. There are also 2 hard raised areas about the size of a dime near the tip of my chin. These areas, especially the dime size ones on the chin are often painful and they blanch when pressed. Also, the skin on my chin doesn't heal well although the skin over the ones on my cheek is normal.
I have been to derms and estheticians and everyone was left scratching their heads. Out of sheer and extreme frustration I gave myself a very aggressive microdermabrasion a few days ago and saw that once I broke the skin that a hard white substance came out of the pours. Once I saw that I waited a few days and last night I steamed my face and used witch hazel on cotton rounds and rubbed with firm pressure over the areas. It looked like someone pushing play dough thru hundreds of tiny presses! I continued doing this for close to an hour and ran thru a sleeve of cotton rounds and my arm was tired!
This morning, when I got out of the shower I repeated the process with the cotton rounds. Very little came from the ones on my cheek, and a couple on the chin, but it kept coming out of others. This substance is not like what comes out of a pimple, it is tiny firm strands.
Does anyone know what this is, what causes it and how I can get rid of it? I would be so appreciative of some guidance. Thanks in advance! |

Is it milia? It sound rather big though if you have dime sized ones and I'm surprised that dermatologists haven't figured it out yet. Do you use heavy creams? Especially after exfoliating? It can clog your pores and cause hardened oils to form.
AHA, vitamin c, dermabrasion and exfoliating can help reduce them. It takes a long time but basically you have to take enough skin off that the hardened oil can come out. I wouldn't over scrub the skin as that can cause tears and you might get more.
Also if you use mineral makeup don't use a brush to apply, use a sponge. The bristles could be rough and cause more tears. |

No heavy creams - Cetaphill mostly. obagi sometimes. I use vit c and retin a when no inflammation, which isn't often lately. I've issued dermabrasion, recently started using a clarisonic. No mineral makeup ever - I use Lorac with my fingers, no brush. The brush I use to dab blush lately on my chin causes me to wince.
I do feal that I am finally making some progress with the Conair facial sauna that arrived on Friday. I have been using it all weekend and then pressing out the gunk with cotton rounds. Some areas no longer have anything coming out with this process and I have only one tender area left on my chin. I hope this will be the end of it after a year long battle.
I would love to know what this is and what caused it in the first place. |

It sounds like over-clogged pores.
I would look at some BHA exfoliants on a daily basis until this condition improves.
You may take one of those:

I am using 2% BHA daily and spot treating with BHA 9%. Keeps me clear.
I also use AHA face wash every evening.
AHA and microdermabration is good, but they dont help you with clogged pores. BHA is getting inside of your pore to do the job. |

I don't think it is Milia at all. Milia is not painful and it is not "dime-size" either. But it is clusters together and they multiply when skin is not taken care of.
I suggest you see a doctor or a dermatologist and get a second opinion or even a 3rd opinion. Until you know what it is, you can not assume anything and treat it by yourself. You may even enhance the severity of your problem if you do that. Good luck! |

Some information on milia with a photo;
http://www.skinsight.com/adult/milia.htm
As the article states, it is usually on top of the cheeks. Usually quite small and common.
The OP has described it as larger. Hopefully a good doctor can determine what it is and a treatment. |

I just saw an article about something called molluscum contagiosum. Google it maybe? I would think, though, that a doctor would have recognized it.
In any case, I hope you get to the bottom of it. |
