I'm reaching my late 20s so 3 weeks ago I decided to step my skincare routine up a notch by introducing a retinol product and a vitamin C+E serum. First week I buffered the retinol serum with moisterizer and applied nightly after washing my face. The last few day I've been applying the retinol straight to my skin. I always use the vit C serum and spf 44 sunscreen first thing every morning.
Yesterday I noticed the under eye area (just above the cheek bone)to be shrivelled and wrinkles more apparent. I panicked and lepped onto google for answers. It seems there are many threads like this where people have experience the same thing. The scary thing is as far as I'm aware none told of any improvement or return to normal.
I've not experienced redness or flaking just dryness and more pronouced wrinkles under the eye. This is the exact opposite effect I wanted especially around the eye area. The reason I bought it was to prevent wrinkles/strenghten the eye area!
I eat very well, don't smoke or drink.
Really confused and need some good advice. Shall I bail or is this indeed a phase? Will my skin return to normal or am I screwed?
Any advice would be really, really appreciated!
Regards,
Al |

What you are seeing IS dryness. Back off to every other night, be conservative about putting it near your eyes and be mindful of the recommended amount of product that is supposed to be used. More isn't better!
I am oily and 41 and I still can't use vitamin A products every night. |

Hi Laura,
Thanks for you reply. I shall go back to every other night and mix it in with moisturizer to be sure.
You're right it's dryness. I look the same after a night out drinking..
Is there anything I can do to quicken my skin's return to normal while reducing he retinol dosage? |

Update:
After experiencing adverse affects with my new retinol serum I wanted to make sure I had a sensible skin-care routine. Maybe here are too many acids or Vit CE which could cause drying or something. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
Morning:
Gentle Cleanser
Then I mix - Moisturizer lotion (w/ antioxidants),
a couple of drops of a antioxidant serum (w/ pure hyaluronic acid & vitamins), and a drop of CE serum (w/ Caffeic).
Followed by a spf 44 cream (w/ C+E & zinc oxide)
Evening:
Gentle Cleanser
0.01% retinol serum
Gentle moisturizer |

Update 2:
Go this response from the cosmetic company I buy many of my products from.
Thank you for contacting us. From the sounds of it, your under eye area is becoming dry/dehydrated which is causing the tightening and wrinkling effect. You may need an added hydrating moisturizer for the eye area and you can layer that on top of the retinol serum. One we suggest is our own hydrating cream-It provides a protective barrier against the harsh effects of the environment with its unique combination of plant oils, antioxidants, emollients, cell-communicating ingredients and skin-identical ingredients.
We’d be happy to send samples if you’d like, just confirm your shipping address and we will get these on their way to you right away! |
