Hi

First time using this site so would be grateful for any advise that can be offered.

I have always had dry skin and have had lines on my forehead from early twenties.

Over the past few years my skin seems to have just fallen apart. I have developed marked frown lines, deeper lines on my forehead. But what is concerning me most is the wrinkles and fine lines that have developed on my lower face. I saw a facialist who said my skin was very dehydrated and crepey. I then started to notice that when i smile i have lots of little crinkly, wrinkled lines. Here is a picture if i can add it.......

It is really depressing me and making me very self concious, I am constantly trying not to smile. I have been looking at other peoples skin and have only noticed a similar effect on people who are much older ( eg 50 plus) . I am currently 8 months pregnant and I had really hoped I would get lovely glowly skin but no such look, still very dry!

I don't even want to be worrying about this when pregnant and it is such a special time, but it is taking over my mind. I keep checking in the mirror and feel disgusted with the look of it. I also plan on breast feeding so am restricted on what I can take/ do to combat it. I'm just afraid of it getting mworse and looking even older that I already do.

I am currently drinking 3-4 litres of water a day, have pregnancy vitamins with omega 3 in , eat lots of fruit and veg and avoid all sunlight and use an spf50. I have recently started using rosehip oil and use simple nivea blue as a night cream over the oil. I use nivea soft during the daytime after the rosehip oil.I gently exfolliate each day with a muslim cloth.Usually I use more expensive brands but my skin is quite reactive when pregnant... plus I am trying to avoid am potentially harmful ingredients.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have enough fat in your diet? Butter, eggs, salmon, olive oil, nuts, etc. Low fat diets ruin your skin.

Rosehip oil is definitely great start! I started using it approx. 1.5 yrs. ago and it has dramatically transformed my skin! I also recommend coconut oil----I rotate between the 2...but haven't been using coconut oil for as long as the rosehip oil. I also recommend a scrubbing cleanser....Such as Olay Pro X Scrub 2-3 times per week. I also noticed improvement with ROC Night Cream...Which ironically I use in my am routine

I think diet is very important and you need to make sure you have good balance of fat, protein. grains and take enough water. Then, add retin a to your skincare routine (consult your doctor first). It works well to improve the texture of the skin. And keep your skin stay hydrated and well moiturized, plus sunscreen during the day. You are still young and I believe you still can improve your skin concern.

I really feel for you...
It sounds like your diet and skin care are already quite good.
Please keep in mind that pregnancy impacts hormones, and they have a huge impact on our skin, so if it is significantly worse during pregnancy, it is possible you just have to wait it out.
For my skin dryness issues (caused by retin-A), I found oils helped a bit (you already use great oils), and I find that moisturisers with B3 niacinamide (Cerave or Olay) and/or B5 (panthenol gel) were huge help. I've seen huge difference within a couple of days.

I agree with Softskin, up the fats in your diet walnuts especially are great for the skin, obviously don't over do it but often we end up eating quite low fat without even noticing.

The rosehip seed oil sounds great, also bepanthen or the weleda baby face cream both which contain lanolin can be great for very dry skin and is cheap too.

I want to give you tons of hope because I went through this as a fair skinned person a few years ago.

I got a lot of sun before age 20, so even though I avoided it after that age, the dermis seemed to suffer mid/late twenties. I felt so hopeless, and that it was much worse than my friends (it was bc Im so fair) and even famous dermatologists told me retin A wouldn't change the wrinkles that were more than superficial.

But all of these have been MUSTS for me and I see a difference if I stop any of them: total sun avoidance, sleep and tons of fruits and raw vegetables have helped immensely!

There is a lot of emerging science behind nutrition/skin so go all out.

A tip for dry/sensivite skin. Use Short contact therapy with retin A. I tend to feel like I get better results with Tazorac, btw. Like more robust results, but I use both.

You may need a physical only sunscreen once your skin is sensitive from Retin A.

I believe you can turn it around!

BTW- you might want to be aggressive on your arms and hands... with sunscreen and vitamin c at least, because the sun spots, etc on my arms and hands came about 5 years after I saw changes on my face.

I wore sunscreen on my arms, but wasn't consistent with my hands... I knew I would regret it and I do but it was so hard to do many times a day.. but do it!

Oops.. I missed that you were pregnant.

Here's what I'd recommend if you can't use retin-A

1) see if you are allowed to use retinol

2) if not, """ vitamin c

3) if not, use glycolic acid peels. These will stimulate regeneration in your skin.

I would not stop manual exfoliation and only use AHA's/BHA's/Vit C, because those affect the skin on a cellular level so you get more effect.
