Every time I try to apply an oil directly to my skin, my face gets this weird warm, crawly sensation. Has anyone else experienced this? It's gets a bit red as well. I've tried just about every oil I can think of- marula, maracuja, avocado, squalane, jojoba, argan....and they all cause the same reaction. Maracuja and olive oil were the least aggravating, but squalane caused instant flushing and a pretty awful scaly rash, which is strange since it is derived from olives.
For reference, I do not have rosacea, and I don't slather it on. I use a few drops in my palm, rub my hands together and pat them onto my face.
I would really like to be able to use an oil as a moisturizer, but I'm running out of options. Even if I mix an oil into another product, I get this weird reaction. Anyone have any idea what's going on here? |

That's a really weird reaction you have going on there! May I ask what you are applying to your face before you apply the oil? Botanical oils tend to "push" other actives deeper into the skin. If they are oil-soluble actives like salycilic acid or retinoic acid (retin-a, tretinoin, differin gel, etc) then it can cause those actives to absorb faster & deeper into the skin which may result in flushing. If you are not applying other actives before the oil, then I am stumped! Unless you are sensitive to those plants? |

Thanks for the response, Doodlebug! I did not know oil pushes actives deeper! That is very useful. I have to learn more about that; I don't understand the mechanism of it. Sometimes, I layer it on top of a vitamin c serum, which may account for the more intense prickliness this round. It does happen though when I apply it to bare skin, as well. And it happens with every oil, to varying degrees, regardless of where it's derived.
The weirdest thing is, I can do cold creams without any trouble. My skin loves cold creams, and I don't know why it doesn't seem to tolerate oils. |

Yes oils push actives in further, but you can also apply an oil to prevent the actives going in deeper too if you apply it first. So for example when I was using high strength retin in the beginning, I applied a layer of vit E oil first and then the Retin. I did this for about 6-8 months and then was able to apply it neat without oil but it took that time. Good advice from my derm.
Now not all oils are the same. Even squalene, I've found there to be different types out there. Some my dry skin loves and others that it just doesn't like.
Vit C - depends on the strength you were using. My skin can't tolerate 20%, but it can do 15% quite easily. I make my own using recipes on here.
You might want to try a lighter oil like avocado. Some oils are heavy and avocado is one of the lighter ones that seems to work better for oily skinned folk. |
