Recipes for solid body butters or massage bars?

I just splurged on LUSH stuff again Sad

I hate that! I've been pretty good for ages but I caved and spent a bit too much again Embarassed

Seeing as there are a number of people here experimenting with DIY I thought I'd ask if anybody has any LUSH-like recipes.... I would really like to make something like Buffy The Backside Slayer or King of Skin but I have no idea what I'm doing.... Has anybody by any chance tried making something like that?

Re Lush, I actually have one close to me now! (I say close, it's a 90 mile round trip!). I went in, smelled awful, I looked at all the stuff and was horrified at all the chemicals in the soaps Shock

I thought this stuff was sposed to be natural! SLS in soap! what a con!

I will make my coffee buffy though, as soon as I get time Very Happy

are the butters hard to make tho? Do you have to whip it or something? Confused

I love the body shop ones (esp. nut) but not sure I am co-ordinated enough to make something like that myself.

GG - Thanks for the link. I read through that thread and what peeves made sounds exactly like what I want. Was there any place where exact quantities of ingredients were posted? I don't know if I missed something but I couldn't find any fool-proof instructions.... Embarassed

Also, please post back when you make your own Coffee Buffy - would love to hear how it turned out.

Re: LUSH. I agree that they are not as natural as they make themselves out to be. I really like the I Should Coco soap (although I don't like coconut smells in general) and I hope that is one of their more natural ones. Is there another name for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate though? I don't see it listed in the soap ingredients...

Re Lush, maybe they make to a different formula in oz, but nearly all the soaps I saw had sls in the ingredients with the exception of a rasouul mud one and a milk and honey one I think. I'm not that familiar with them as this was first time in there, but I was pretty unimpressed! Confused

Hmmm I don't think we have a milk & honey LUSH soap here. I might check out the UK site and see how it all compares. I would have thought I'd be all standardised....

Hi Mabsy!

If you want to make massage bar/body butter, I like to use the 1/3 recipe:

1/3 butter (cocoa, shea, mango, kokum, etc.)
1/3 oil (sweet almond, jojoba, any light oils are nice)
1/3 wax (beeswax, soy wax)

Melt the above contents (in a double boiler) and pour into a jar or a mold (candy molds work well) and once hardened pop it out of the mold and you have a massage bar.

If you like shea or mango butters, "Whipped Butters" are popular right now:

Take some shea (mango, etc.), melt it down and start whipping it with a blender (whisk attachment is nice), keep whipping and putting the shea in the freezer for a few minutes cooling it, take it out and whip it again keep doing this until you get a nice fluffy consistency. I find adding a bit of oil helps the shea butter become flufflier. I use Shea Butter with some Shea Oil added. Also, some find butters a bit oily. If this is the case, adding some cornstarch (1 teaspoon to 6 oz.) should lessen the oily feel. Fragrance with a cosmetic safe fragrance oil or essential oil. And, you have a Whipped Shea Butter.

I agree about the LUSH products, like I said in another thread, I was so excited to finally be able to go to their store, only to see chemicals in many of their products that don't really need it. Why do they need SLS in their soap? I know it increases lather, but natural soap in itself has great lather. And, propylene glycol, why is that in the soap?

Speaking of Rhassoul, I just received my order of Rhassoul, as well as Dead Sea Mud, Kaolin Rose Clay and French Green Clay and Aloe Powder, I can't wait to soap these! Very Happy
