Hi,

I am a 22 year old male with normal skin, I do have dark circles but i think they are hereditary so i guess i am out of luck there.

Anyway, I was hoping you guys could give me some advice on general skin care? the only thing i do is use Olay Facewash.. can you suggest a diet as well as skincare routines i should follow? Please keep in mind that i am on a budget and thanks for your time! Smile

Hi...we are a little bit more lucky when it comes to anti-aging than women (sorry ladies!), because men seem to age slower than women. First, our skin is thicker, so wrinkles are not as deep & lack skin is not as big an issue. Also, we have facial hair, which the growing follicles "hold" our face in place and give it a framework of structure, if you will. We also have to exfoliate less (except our forehead & nose)because most men shave daily, which is a great form of exfoliation.
At your age, I would recommend a good eye product & SUNSCREEN! Also, you might want to start thinking about using a topical vitamin C treatment.

As for diet, lots & lots of water. Cutting down on dairy products will keep your skin clear & glowing, and since men have a greater bone density, we don't have to worry as much about osteo-problems stemming from calcium loss.

I am also a big advocate of supplements, especially MSM & Omega-3, which has made a dramatic difference in my skin - keeping it clear & firm & just generally healthy-looking.

That's as much as I can think of offhand. I'm sure some of the other guys will jump in with their ideas too.
-Darren

Skin care knows no age or gender. If you have clear skin, the Oil of Olay face wash is great and at least spf 15 sunscreen for daytime use. Try to find one thats loaded with antioxidants.

At nightime your facewash again and a moisturizer of your choice (if you need it on dry areas). Thats it!

The thing about men's skin is really due to testerone. Obviously, men produce it and women produce estrogen. Testerone promotes the growth of collagen and estrogen slows the growth of the collagen, hence the fact that men appear to age slower.

Outside of that, there really isn't a lot of difference. I am male and I just don't buy into the whole "shaving keeps us looking younger". Obviously, exfoliating is a good thing, but it has more to do with the genetic makeup than shaving.

The advice given is fine. Use a good cleanser, add a good Vitamin C Serum and a Physical Sunblock with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide for a full spectrum block. SkinCeuticals has an excellent one. You can also incorporate their Serum 10, and work your way up. The Hydrating B5 Gel is awesome also. Their Simply Clean is nice and contains AHA's for exfoliation.

Basically, you need to approach your skin with prevention in mind and the most important one is sunblock.

You don't have to buy it from skinceuticals .com. By all means, you can if you want, but you may be able to get better prices at other places, along with free/cheaper shipping, or samples etc. Where are you located?

I never said that "shaving keeps us looking younger". What I said was that men have to exfoliate less (except for the nose & forehead areas)because shaving is a naturally exfoliating process. This isn't my opinion - it's a fact accepted by skin care professionals worldwide.

I would say that you should probably start with just a Serum 10 from Skinceuticals (you can have a look at the description here). In terms of sunblock, if you want to stick with Skinceuticals then I find that the Ultimate UV Defense is a good one (description here).

Good on you for wanting to take good care of your skin! Btw, eye cream wise. I find that Babor Sensational Eyes is very nice and also quite good pricewise. Murad Essential-C eye cream is also very good and it has SPF as well.
