I am thinking about trying the B.E. mineral veil or a loose foundation, are they extra shimmery? I prefer matte looks but I like the idea of using natural mineral makeup. Has this made anyone breakout? |

Hi there,
I've been using Bare Escentuals for about 2 years now and it's not extra shimmery. I mean, I have oily skin and the LAST thing I want is to be "extra" shimmery apart from my own, natural "shimmer" ha ha ha. The powder goes on smoothly (take some time to practice applying it with the B.E. brush because you only need a very little amount for it to cover a LOT). The mineral veil sets the make-up, is very very light, and again, no artificial shimmer.
The powder does not make me break out but do not do as they say on tv -- that "you can even sleep in it cuz it's so natural." That's not true. I accidentally fell asleep with it on once and it didn't really "help" my skin. I think my skin's own oiliness contributed to the minor breakout, but I think it's just a cardinal rule: wash your face before you sleep.
Let me know if you have any other questions. It's kind of difficult finding the right color -- I'm Asian and I use 2.3 Medium Beige. Most use the Medium (#3) but it was a little dark for me. And the fair color (#2) was way too light. It's best to buy a little "starter set" where people give you two colors to try to see which one fits you best. Or call the boutiques and ask for free samples to figure out your color.
Hope this helps. Again, NO artificial shimmer, and NO breakouts (as long as you take care of your skin as usual).
Lisa

Thanks Lisa, that was very helpful. I am asian too with oily-combo skin, so if it worked for you it will probably be good on my skin as well (and from reading previous posts, I noticed your a sothy's fan as well?) Thanks for the tip about not sleeping with the minerals. I was actually thinking, "oh good if I fall asleep like I tend to do, it won't be so bad." I know that's terrible! |

Hi Thoughtcrime,
Glad to be of help. Perhaps there is another Lisa on the forum as I'm actually a Yon-Ka Paris fan. I haven't used Sothys before, but after reading all the raves, I should start trying them out ha ha ha.
Let me know if you have any more questions on Bare Escentuals. It's an amazing product -- everyone that I've recommended it to has LOVED it and won't use anything else. It's pretty inexpensive, too, which is great! AND you don't have to use a lot of it for coverage.
It really helps with oily skin, too. There's really not as much "shine" on the skin throughout the day, which is really a confidence booster!

I have another question for you, sorry but your the expert on B.E. products :P
Can you wear the loose foundation wthout concealer. Does it offer that much coverage in your opinion?
Also I tend to love transcluscent loose powder with no color, so which B.E. foundation do you think would be comparable? thanks again! |

Hi Thoughtcrime,
No problems Glad I can be of help! You can definitely wear the loose foundation without concealer -- I do so ALL the time. The only time I use concealer is if I have a really really red spot (ie: if I pick at my face and the capillaries turn red . . . ) -- that's the only time I use concealer. If you do use concealer, just "conceal" the places that are most obvious and then apply the loose foundation. If it's a tough spot, you'll want to run the brush on that spot a little more to cover but it is INSANE coverage. You wouldn't believe it. I seriously didn't think it could do so much but it really does cover nasty spots and zits and such. Just practice the application technique (so you apply it evenly throughout your face). Concealer is definitely usable but try the foundation without concealer first to see if you're comfortable with it.
Regarding the transluscent powder with no color -- the closest thing would probably be the Mineral Veil. It has no color and it's SO light. It's usually used on top of foundation to 'set' the make up -- but I love it. It's so light and no color at all (for your sake). I also think there's this thing called Bisque but I'm not sure what it does. I found my foundation and mineral veil work perfectly so I'm not trying out other products for now. Perhaps someone that has used Bisque can give us some information.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi thoughtcrime,
Although I am not a real makeup person (I wear concealer, blush and lipstick) Jane Iredale is a great mineral based line. Unfortunately she doesn't supply samples, but with the help from the spa/caspers mum (she is a professional makeup person) they could best direct you in terms of color etc. Good luck!

Barbara, thanks for the advice as well!!
Does anyone have any recommendations for mineral eyeshadows? I rarely wear shadow and only own 2 colors. I have dark eyes. |

Hello Thoughtcrime!
Hello Chunlisa!
I've been using BE since last summer and the first ptd I got from this line is Summer Bisque SPF 20.
I would call this one a skin enhancer when you want to look naturally flawless without using lots of foundation and make up ( especially on the beach). I use it to cover my blemishes ( some blackheads on the nose, dark circles under eyes, red zits on forehead) and also to add some highlight under my brows, on my eyelids or on my cheeks. I have very pale skin ( MAC NC15), and this powder blends in very nicely and gives my skin some color. And eventhough it's a powder, the second you dab it on your skin it just stays without giving you any feeling of stickiness or greasiness. And to have a more perfect finish I just sweep a light layer of Mineral Veil all over my face with a Kabuki brush and am ready to go ( Chunlisa has given us excellent review of Mineral Veil, I have nothing else to say ~_^). It has an SPF of 20, so IMHO, I think it's an excellent use. Hope this help, ladies.
Oh! I must add I just use this loose powder Bisque with a camouflage brush as spot camouflage or highlighter, and not for the whole face :P:P:P |

Another vote for BE right here! I don't think the foundations are too shimmery at all. Especially if you use the mineral veil on top.
I think it's absolutely amazing how much coverage the BE foundations give. But you do have to be patient and learn how to apply it properly otherwise it looks cakey (well that's what I found anyway).
Let us know how you go with it if you decide to get it |

Is the mineral veil meant to be worn over B.E.'s loose foundation? |

Hi thoughtcrime,
Yes, the Mineral Veil is like a setting powder for the foundations. You can go without using it (I do mostly) but it is supposed to absorb oil and minimize the look of pores.

Dear all,
Glad to see so many BE Experts here! I just received my BE order from EDS last night. I bought the Summer Bisque and the Starter kit in ""Fair" (#1.2 and #2) colour. This morning I wore #2 and it seems to be a bit dark for my skin tone (even darker than my neck colour!). I guess I need to mix the colour a bit to find a right match.
I want to ask how exactly do you put the BE foundation on? I know you swirl on the lid, tap and "buff" on the face... what exactly does "buff" mean? Does it mean "sweeping" the brush on the face? I want to make sure I am applying the foundation in a right way coz my pores do look big after I put on the foundation.
Also, do you use different brush for foundation and mineral veil?
Sorry for posting such stupid questions here. |

Hi Catlee,
Allow me to shed some light First of all, they are not stupid questions at all because I found it quite hard to get the hang of the application method. But once you get it right it's worth it!
Put a small amount of foundation powder in the cap of the container (you can mix your #2 with #1.2 or with the mineral veil to make it lighter). Thoroughly swirl the brush in the powder (at an angle) so it all gets worked into the brush. Tap the handle of the brush to remove any excess foundation. Start swirling away! This is supposed to be done in small quick circular movements (like waxing a car :P *sigh* that reminds me.... I really should wax mine. it's feeling a bit neglected.) starting from the lower side of your face (like from neck up; not sure why though that's just what I have been taught by a beautician). Don't over do it, just go over your face evenly and go back to any places that need more coverage.
To answer your other question, yes I use a different brush. Mainly because there may still be foundation left in your brush and you'll just be adding more coverage.
Let us know how you go. Like I said, it took me a few times to get it right and I've heard a lot of people say the same thing. So don't get discouraged if it doesn't look right the first time. Come back on here and someone will be able to give you better instructions than mine |

Hi Mabsy,
Thank you so much for your detail instructions! I will print it out and stick it on my bathroom wall so I can follow the instructions!
Give me some time to experiment with both the colour mix and the application method and I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again! |
