Hi everyone,
I don't know why I didn't post this earlier since it's something my mom and I do habitually, but just FYI:
For those of you who use skin care products that come in plastic "squeeze" tubes, when you get to the end of the product (ie: no matter how hard you try, you can't squeeze any more product out), take a pair of scissors and cut the plastic tube/bottle in half. You will be amazed at how much product clings to the side of the tube/bottle.
This obviously doesn't work for glass bottles (ouch, that would be painful) so don't try it on such things. This trick also isn't necessary for see-through plastic bottles since you can clearly see how much product is left (ie: think of the gel nettoyant cleanser by Yonka -- clear plastic bottle; plus, you can turn the bottle over to get the last few drops of cleanser out).
If this is confusing, think of a tube of toothpaste. You squeeze and you squeeze but you can't get any more out --so cut the tube in half. You really will be surprised at what's left. For example, I've had my Proactiv Acne wash bottle sitting upside down for a week, and still, nothing comes out. So I cut the bottle in half tonight and there is at least enough to last me another 1.5 weeks! SERIOUSLY ladies . . . get your money's worth.
Another concern is that the product will be exposed to the open air once you cut open the tube -- so do what I do: have a zip-lock bag handy and put the product in there for storage. One, it keeps exposure to the air at a minimum and it keeps the product from drying out too fast.
I also do this with shampoos and conditioners. I use Paul Mitchell and Nioxin (not really the most inexpensive products out there) so I really want to get the last drop out of the bottles. Again, cut the bottle in half and see what's left on the sides . . . usually lasts me about 6 or 7 more washes (I have short hair, though).
Okay, just wanted to share this secret if no one else is using it. It really works very well. Just be careful when cutting. The bottls might not cut "clean" so you don't want to scrape your hand on any sharp edges of the plastic bottle. Also, be careful when you make the first "cut" into the bottle or tube (that's usually the hardest part). Try to make a quick 'poke' so you have a place to start cutting.

Great tips Lisa! And just to add to that.... Products in plastic tubes or bottles (as well as glass bottles) can be turned upside down and 'heated up' to force everything that clings to the sides to slide down. By heated up I don't mean microwaved I mean place the bottle upside down and stand it under running hot water. As the product becomes warmer is starts to slide down the sides right into the cap. This of course works with products that do not require to be kept at a specific temperature range (e.g. shampoos).
I like to finish off my products (doesn't happen all that often really ) but I find that with 'ok' products I get a sense of accomplishment when I finish it but since it was just 'ok' I never bother to try to get the last bit out. With products I like though I try to get everything out especially if I forgot to restock on the item (not a problem recently either! ).
Mabsy.
ps. Nioxin's fantastic! Love the minty feeling and the results. |

Wow Lisa, you read my mind!!! I have been doing that for as long as I can remember, that's why I love products that come in tubes and hate it when they come in little glass jars, plastic bottles and the worst is pumps (hygenic but wasteful). If I don't like a product, I use it on my body such as arms or legs... |
