I don't know much about it, but apparently, grapeseed fruit extract has become an extremely controversial chemical compound recently. Studies conducted in the US and abroad report suspicious and abnormal chemical acitivity in numerous, randomly selected grapefruit seed extracts.
I read parts of the study, and they discourage people from using it in large perecentages. |

quacko,
The reports that you are referring to is in regard to trace amounts of parabens found in certain brands of grapefruit seed extract.
Grapefruit seed extract is used as a natural preservative alternative to paraben. But it was found that grapefruit seed extract sold by certain manufacturers & suppliers still contained trace amounts of parabens, but those ingredients were not listed on the GSE bottles. |

Thanks guys. Turns out that GSE is not natural after all, and if it is, there is no anti-microbial properties in it. It's therefore a useless ingredient at the very least and with the benzethonium chloride in it at concentrations of over 8%, may even be harmful to skin. People have varying risk tolerance so I guess if you must have a product and it contains GSE, it should be the last or bottom ingredient in the list.
However, I looked at the Aubrey-Organics (GSE pioneer) website and they included GSE as one of those safe preservatives
http://www.aubrey-organics.com/about/articles/healthy3.cfm
Dr. Hauschka and Weleda are the other products that they recommend using safe ingredients. I don't know if they have affiliations with them, but that's quite a limited list. |

Well I would assume that Aubrey Organics put uncontaminated (no parabens, no benzethonium chloride) grapefruit seed extract in their products, although there is no mention of this. Since they claim to only use purely organic ingredients, then I guess it's safe to assume. |

Yes, most likely they are either using organic grapefruit seed extract (which is cold pressed, not a by-product of making grapefruit juice), or grapefruit seed extract, USP/FCC.
There are manufacturers out there who produce GSE specifically for use in cosmetic applications, and theirs is pure & uncontaminated. |
