Hello,
Last week I went to my endotontist because one of my teeth has pain. As I expect he offered to do a root canal. I have a major exam on the Dec 8th and endodontist offered to do procedure on the Dec. 4 or Dec 15. These are the only days that he is available. My tooth pain is moderate, but increasing every day. I have an option to do it before the exam, but I am afraid if the pain after root canal will be even worse for a few days than what I have now. This exam is very important and I don't want to feel sick when I will do it.
Please, share your experience. Should I do it before exam or try to wait with pain killers until December 15?
Thanks |

I have had 5 root canals and the pain before the root canal was excruciating, as soon as I had the root canal my pain was gone. I would have the procedure done before your exams because for me no amount of pain killers could take away my toothache pain. I felt like I was going to die with my toothaches. |

Thanks, cookie for answering! You have done 5 root canals, poor you!
The pain is getting worse and I don't know how I will wait until Dec 8. I am taking now 4 Advil pills (extra strength) every 4 hours, but it doesn't help much, plus I have swollen gum on the side of that tooth. |

Lara, go as soon as possible. Root canals were nothing for me and I had no pain after having them done. You will feel total relief when they get the root out. If you can get an appointment sooner, take it. |

I agree, I had an abscess on my tooth and had to have a root canal done - by the next day I was fine. Get is seen to as soon as possible - and good luck with the exam. |

I also think it should be done as soon as possible. The pain may become unbearable if not done. After the root canal (if done by a good endodontist) you may have no paint at all, or some for a few days, but it is not comparable to the pain before.
Good luck! |

I've had two root canals done and I felt fine after a day. I think it's best to have it done before your exam. |

Thank you everyone for replying! The pain is really bad today and I called the dentist. He will do the root canal sooner, this Tuesday, may be he will have an opening for me even on Monday if one of the patients cancel his/her appointment. I just wish I could do something about the pain until Tuesday.
Thanks everyone! |

My dentist did not do root canals in his office and therefore would send me out to an endontist. If the pain gets really bad demand to be seen. Every dentist that I have been to always keeps there schedule open for emergencies. You can also request some antibiotics, that stopped the pain for me. I'm sorry. |

Keep taking the pain killers of course - but you can also try oil of cloves. You get it from the pharmacy and it's especially for toothache - just paint it all over the painful tooth and gum with a q-tip. It's rather an old fashioned remedy - but it will help. |

Once you have the root canal, the pain from the tooth itself will be gone.. No root, equals no pain.. You'll just *maybe* experience a little soreness, for a day or so, and Tylenol should take care of that..
I *root* for the early date .. |

Lara1, I'm glad you are getting it done sooner. I had one done a few months ago. I had soreness but wouldn't say I had actual pain after. The assistant told me to take Advil for the next 2-3 days, this helped with the soreness. |
