Non permanent/ gentle hair color recomendations?

Hello all,

Can you recomend a non permanent and/or very gentle hair color?

I would like to get some black and red into my hair, but I dont want to cause too much damage.
My hair is already a mess as it is.

What kind of dye could you recomend?

Yes, I used Henna alot when I was younger...( I'm now a beach-blondie ), but I used to put Henna over my (then) brown hair, to get a nice wine-red tint to it. It's in powder form, completely natural, makes your hair shiny, and you mix it with some water (or vinagre I think...read instructions) to make this paste... it smells pretty good, it's messy I admit, but hey...it won't damage your hair so it's worth the mess! Very Happy

i used to work in a fair trade shop that sold henna. i think places like oxfam and such will have them.

you can get all different shades of henna too, black, brown, or a maroonish colour.

it takes quite long though, 1 hour, to set the colour, but will also have a conditioning effect on the hair.

but it can be quite staining, more so tha regular dyes, so you may want to put something like vaseline, or an oil around your ears and scalp to prevent staining!!

I can't remember the exact name of the brand that was sold in our Trade Aid shop.

But I think you want to go for something that is pure henna, and sourced ethically and organically. Because some may contaminated with fillers or other artificial colourants.

And in New Zealand, it's very hard to find a variety of henna in any store, so I've only come across the one from India.

A good way to see I think would be to read a bit about the brand on the package, see what the package says about how the product is made and where it's from.

I have also seen something called Herbalife? Veggie tints, which is like colouring from vegetable dyes. They aren't as safe as henna, but don't have as many controversial ingredients.

I went to Whole Foods and got Rainbow Black Henna, I am just trying to test it.

I am not sure what it's supposed to look like, but I mixed it with boiling water, it created a creamy paste, but when I went to put it onto my hair, it turned to a chunky mud looking thingy, that doesnt stay on hair or even seems to cover anything..

What am I doing wrong?

Did the pack not come with instructions on how to mix the paste?

I did some research on how to mix henna powder to make hair dye.. it seems that you need to have something with an ACIDIC pH to create the paste with.

The paste that is created for hair dye can be simple or complex, like with oils and essential oils. You can also use ACV as a pH base. And a lot of people also leave their paste overnight to oxidise. I have never heard of such a method, but it's probably the proper way.

If you choose the ones towards the end, for darker hair, you can see people's own recipes.

Here is one by someone called Ata, seems like an easy-ish one to make.

I wanted to get a black color. So first I used Red Henna from Nour Henna , Its from a middle-eastern food store in the Valley.

So since I have boyish style short hair I used 75 grams.I also added 10 generous shakes of salt .I heated 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and added it to the mixture.The salt helps bite in the color. .Might I add that that its smelly and messy . So I bagged my whole bathroom with black bags.I added hot distilled drinking water to the henna powder to a jello mix consistency.

I just waited 3 three hours then I slobbered it all over.I then kept it on for 1 1/2 hours. During that time I would use the blow dryer to speed up the process. I knew it was enough when it was hard like micro size rocks.I went into the shower and washed it first with 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar.Then I washed with Paul Mitchell Shampoo.

I think the most important thing is to: use something acidic, and to leave it to oxidise.

Definitely try Surya Henna and conditioner. I found it pretty nice. Also on a regular basis I use L'Oreal colorspa. I found it better than other off-the-shelf non permanent hair colors.

Henna wears off naturally, or when rubbed with oil(?). It is plant derived.

I used hennas a lot as a teen, I found them messy, gritty and stinky, didn't enjoy the process one bit. Also, I found them just as harsh on scalp as any temporary hair dye.
