Hi
I've started a new skincare regime and am experiencing several difficulties. I was hoping someone might have some answers.
Some background: As some might recall, when I joined the forum I was an avid Clinique 3-Step System fan. It kept my face clean and fresh and controlled my acne. When I started using mineral make-ups (right before I found this forum) I found the two to be drying in combination. I tried other mineral make-up brands trying to find one to hydrate my skin and was successful in finding a few but my skin was still too dry with mineral make up on. This fact coupled with the fact that I'd like amore natural skincare regime, I decided to start trying new products. I had heard raves of Dr H's CC and of apple cider vinegar and oil cleansing methods that sounded great and have been giving them a try lately with no results. Let me tell you my situation now:
I'm getting zits, bursting at the seams with pus (the zits I got on the System were nearly invisible - small and dry). My pores are still clogged. My skin tone is uneven. Nothing is working!
For awhile I was using Dr H's CC, followed by ACV/water toner. Lavender or Tea Tree and Jojoba oil (as a carrier) applied to blemishes.
After less than desirable results with that system, I started using Dr H's toner and moisturizing oil (for oily/impure skin). No results.
I decided to try the Oil Cleansing Method I had heard about here.I tried diffrent micture of Castor Oil and Jojoba Oil and got no plugs, no blackheads, nothing.. and I've plenty to spare. What am I doing wrong?!!
My skin feels soft and supple but to me looks and feels dirty. |

I think it's really hard to say if this is just a normal reaction of your skin to change or if one of the products is not suited to your skin. I know it's too late now but it helps to introduce new products one at a time, particularly when you have acne prone skin. That way you give your skin some time to get used to one product before you hit it with other products. Also, what you are experiencing might just be temporary. How long did you give each product when you were using them? |

Sounds like oils might not be a good thing for you skin. I get simular results if I try to use oils, even so called balancing oils, on my skin. Now, I'm not talking about the pure essential oils, I'm talking about the carrier oils. I've found that if I for example use the dr. H oil for oily skin, and then apply make-up, that the oils just get stuck, prevents my skin from breathing and there the breakouts come.
So I suggest you lay off the oils for a while. Try using Dermalogica daily microfoliant (get a sample), a glycolic toner (like DDF 10% glycolic) or just rub a few drops of tea tree and/or ylang-ylang essential oil in your hand and pat over face, and then a serums (like Bioelements quick refiner- try a sample). I love the Jane Iredale pressed powder and it has never made my skin break out, skin-etc.com sells samples of it (and they last about a week!).
Hope that might solve something |

Same thing happened to me! First of July went in for microderm and a small touch of restalyne, doc gave me tons of samples to try, c serums, kinerase, mild peels and TNS Recovery. Face went wild-small pustles and red marks, peeling, rough skin. Hid inside for a month! Asked forum and they recommended stopping everything so i did. Went back to Cetaphil cleanser and lotion, Dr H cleansing cream at night only, very lightly to let my PH settle back down to normal. Nothing else-then called the nice lady at the skin care institute who sent me samples of the SES soap free cleanser, proheal serum (Morning only) and hydracool (morning and night). That's all i've used for 2 days and my face is like new, exact for the red spots which are fading. It's a miracle and I am thrilled and am ordering full size soon. It is expensive but face is smooth as glass and pores are gone. I will continue with the nightly cleanser plus Dr. H (it seems to help the leftover dead skin) and will work the TNS back in eventually just at night since I have a lot left, but that is it. (Maybe I'll try it on my husband) Good luck to you-I know how it feels. |

Mabsy - about two weeks each. I was trying to go as long as possible but I can only let myself break out so much!
These oils are performing such miracles for everyone else I'm sorry I can't experience them too. Dr H sounded like everything I wanted, as did the results of OCM. I really do have such impure skin even though it's well-maintained. So unfair! Why are some people just born with great skin?
I'm going to keep trying with these things, as I woke up this morning without any new spots (though I've got so. much. healing to do..) but as soon as Dr H runs out, I suppose I'm going to give Happy Hippie's suggestions a try. Dermalogica Microfoliant with DDF Glycolic Toner 10%
DDF has a bunch of great-sounding prodcuts I'd like to try though, such as their 5% BP Cleanser, 10% SA with Tea Tree Oil, Brightening Cleanser, and their Blemish Foaming Cleanser
with that new system, though, I'm going to need a moisturizer/sunscreen.. I'd heard about one that sounded perfect for me but I don't remember it's name. I think it may have been Jan Marini's Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 |

Two weeks may or may not be enough, hard to say. I would really suggest that you stop using the new products and go back to what you know was working for you. Then introduce them one by one and see how your skin handles them. |

Mabsy, how long do you think someone should normally wait to decide if they like how a new product is working or not? |

In my opinion it really depends on what type of product it is. There are many preventative products that you will not "see" working at all but that does not mean that they are not good for your skin in the long term. I think the general rule for products usually is a month to six weeks. Obviously, though, if you have started using a product and got cystic acne straight away and continue to have new ones then you shouldn't wait that long. But, I don't think you're going to find a great product if you only give each one 2 weeks and continue switching. The frequent switching in itself can make your skin react (I guess depending on how senstive your skin is to change). |
