I am heading there in a few weeks, just for a few days. Does any one here have any suggestions on what the must-dos are? I am quite a novice when it comes to Japan - I have only been there once, to Tokyo (I love Tokyo BTW)

Apppreciate your inputs.

TIA

Hi Jenny,

Hmm.. lets see... Kyoto is the town of temples and my absolute favorite in the city is Kiyomizu dera, it is at the top of a huge hill, so be prepared for a hike. There is the main "tourist" street up that is lined with shops, but there is also a back way, which actually winds around the border of a cemetary. Japanese cemetaries are beautiful and very different - espeically this one perched on the mountainside. Early in the day is the best time to go.. and if you can pick it, a day after it rains is great as the skyline will be clearer.

Kinkakuji (golden temple) is of course a must see for everyone too. OH and you should head up into the mountains - about an hour by bus - to a place called Ohara. There is a temple up there called Sanzen-in and it is THE most beautiful place in the world. My absolute favorite temple in Japan. Make sure to leave Kyoto Stn. early in the morning so you can enjoy the whole day.

The remainder of the temples just did nothing for me, but those 3 are must sees.

Osaka.. well, a strange tip, but what-the-heck. Afternoon tea (high tea really) at the Ritz Carlton hotel Osaka. OMG it is just THE BEST (do it on the weekend... ) it is expensive but the amount of food you get is worth it. They had a violinist and all and it was very la di da. Weekends you can enjoy wathcin the wedding guests running around in Kimono too!! We even saw a sumo wrestler all dolled up! They also have a nice SPA in the hotel..

Osaka is all about the food. Famous for "tacoyaki" kind of round eggy-pancaky balls with octopus in them and smothered in sauce. Try monjyayaki too. Kind of a runny pancaky-egg thing with a varitey of toppings cooked on a griddle in front of you.
You NEED to go to Dotombori, packed with shops and restaurants.

OH, hang on.. here is the Osaka tourism site http://www.tourism.city.osaka.jp/en/model/index.htmlthat has some sample courses for sightseeing...

You can also take a trip to NARA from Kyoto (only about 30min or so by train)... and from Osaka it is only about 30min by train to KOBE as well.

Hope you find something of interest in that lot!

Hi Tiger Tim
Thanks for the great tips.

I certainly would look forward to visit the temples that you mentioned cos I did not managed to visit any whilst I was in Tokyo.

And, I like the Osaka Ritz Cartlon tip - I love food - and I am sure it is perfectly relaxing way to spend an afternoon....

Hmmm, I think I am drifting off...oops, better look busy.

Thanks again
Jenny
