I was having a discussion with my mom about how unhealthy i've been feeling. Dark circles under my eyes..bruising easy...blah blah. She thinks i have a vitamin deficiency. So..she bought me this "One a day womens" multivitamin/multimineral supplement stuff. She thinks i need more iron in my diet..and i wouldnt mind Knowing i am covered with all the vitamins i need in a day..zinc, calcium, ect. I'm sure many of you take multivitamins...any suggestions? Is this stuff good? It seems to have good percentages of vitamins...

I'd also doublecheck with your primary care physician to make sure everythings a-okay as well. It wouldn't hurt to have him/her do blood tests to check for low iron/anemia...(if you've already done this, sorry for being redundant.)

Supplementing with vitamins that contain what you may be lacking is good - but I'd rule out anything underlying there with your doc. Laughing

As far as OneADay...I usually go to a Natural Shop to get my vitamins, so I can't comment on how good they are. I buy the New Chapter Only One vitamins. They're awfully big tho!!! Like horse tabs!

Let us know.

Purpleturtle,

I had the same problem as you, I bruised so easily on my shins and they took months to get better. And I was feeling lethargic/weak quite often.

I went to the healthshop and stocked up on a bunch of hocus pocus and iron supplements.

But when I actually went to the doctor to get my blood tests done, I wasn't even iron deficient (though I still had the symptoms, blue rings around iris, bruising etc)

I started taking a zinc supplement with a multi, and B complex. But found occassionaly still had little white bits in my nails - indicating zinc deficiency, so I was wondering what the heck!!

The problem is I don't seem to be absorbing much of any of the minerals/vitamins in my tablets. So no matter how much you pay for them, it is all about the end absorption.

You can try eating a little more red meat, mince if you can't handle the steaks, esp around that time of month.

I have been also taking soy protein with my cereal for about 3months, and my immune system has been like a fort this winter.

My mum does Amway (here comes the sales pitch), and I've just been taking the Nutrilite range of supplements. It is a pretty decent range of products.

Hopefully you can find something that will help you feel better.

I was concerned with how my vitamins were absorbing, too (or rather not absorbing)

So for the past 2 years I've been taking a powdered multi-vitamin and a greens complex. Having to dissolve and drink these 2 takes more time than just popping a pill, but I'm sure it's doing me more good. In fact, after about 2 weeks of drinking my greens complex, I felt more energetic and even waking up in the morning became easier.

Miranets:
As far as tests showing your iron and zinc levels as OK, I'm wondering if they just measure the level and compare it to "standard guidelines", but not taking into account your specific situation, such as physical activity, exposure to certain chemicals, your diet etc. You may need more iron than an "average guideline" person. Maybe a naturopath would be able to evaluate your vitamin needs better than a regular therapist.

miranets-

i pretty much have the same symptoms of what you say iron deficiency would be. I too have blue rings around my iris, the bruising..the lethargic feeling...i really need to get a better doctor because the one ive gone to in the past is pretty useless. I feel like maybe i should go to a vitamin store and tell them my symptoms and see if they can help. I don't think it would be any harm at all giving the vitamins a shot. I just really want the dark blue circles and unhealthy look to go away. Not sure that would cure all of it..but at most i'd like to feel better about things.

I'm sure remember reading about rutin and brusing... you get it from stuff like apple peel, buckwheet.
Edited to add!!

Anyhow regarding vitamins, don't know if it's the same for the US but our RDD was set post war as the minimum to stop you getting scurvy/rickets and the like and not necessarily as a therapeutic dose.

Some things to consider. You may want to check what foods have the vitamins/minerals you think are lacking and munch a few more. e.g Magnesium, dark chocolate contains and coco is supposed to be good for the heart so why not nibble a square a day rahter than pop a pill?

If you think you are lacking in something like iron, I would take only iron (actually it absorbs better when combined with other bits and bobs and a good health store should help you out.

If you want to take a multi vit/mineral. check the dosage. Timed release / chelated is better, split dose is better. Just think how much stuff is supposed to be in that little pill.

yes i would rather find foods that contain what i think i am lacking..the pills are a bit large that im taking..they say to take it while eating food. Probably so it absorbs better. and, and dark chocolate = icky. :/

If you are going to take a supplement, the best is to go to a health-food store and get a food-based one.

Another way is to make a "super-smoothie" every day- I use frozen organic berries (strawberry, rasberry & blueberries for ex.) and then add some fresh fruits (bananas are good as a base, or papaya). You can add a good natural protein-powder with all vitamamins, minerals and green-foods already blended into it. Alittle juice and you're all set.

Try also eating the white lining on the inside of the rind of an orange- it contains Rutin and is good for strenghtening your blood-vessels.

Get good protein in your diet, yes- get some sunshine every day (your body needs it to produce certain vitamins and hormones), excersise or practise some relaxing breathing/meditation and eat those greens (preferably organic). If you smoke...don't...that's the worst you can do for your body (but I'm sure you don't).

It's amazing how much your body can change from eating healthy, moving around in the outdoors (=doing fun excersising), and stress managing. I look healthier now then 10 years ago! Very Happy

I saw a company that produces bio-available liquid mineral supplements. Have you heard of Tj Clark company?www.tjclark.com

They are a naturally sourced mineral 'drink' type of supplement. The compound of each mineral is supposed to be one that can have maximum absorption in the body.

I have read that we can only absorb about 2% of the haem-iron (animal based) and even less of nonhaem (vege based) iron. But I am not sure how true this is, because then we'd all be iron deficient!

I think for those who don't respond well to pills, we are better off getting it from diet or liquid forms.

Sometimes I do a big iron boost by eating an orange, then I steam some spinach very lightly, or you can blanch it, and eat it with mince or steak. So you get your Vit c to help absorb non-haem iron, which helps absorb haem iron.

And keep in mind, even if you take supplements or make changes to diet, it takes at least 3-4 months to notice a change because you have to replenish your iron stores in your body first before you feel the full benefits.
