In another thread, I was asked about rosacea. Seemed a good idea to answer in a new topic:

If you think you have rosacea, see a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis and to talk about treatment options.

My rosacea is pretty much under control, but having it is a true pain because of the extra work and things I have to avoid.

The thing that has helped the most is Metrogel, a prescription antibiotic ointment. A little goes a long way. I apply half a pea-size amount to my nose, cheeks, and other rosacea spots once a day. I hate using an antibiotic everyday, but every time I've tried to weane myself off the gel, the rosacea symptoms flare up again.

Most of my treatment involves using gentle skin care products and avoiding things that cause flare ups.

I love outdoor sports, but my skin can't handle winter sports anymore. The last time I went skiing, my rosacea flared up horribly and I was red and irritated for more than a week.

Other things to avoid include alcohol, foods high in processed sugar, and 'aggressive' skin care ingredients like retinol.

Good luck!

I tried the metrogel but it did not work, alas. My holy grail for rosacea was having the Photofacial IPL's. Although it is the more expensive treatment route, meds just didn't seem to take the redness down. Proheal works well for me when my skin is not in the hypersensitive mode. I found the Obagi Active is the best for treating rosacea skin after procedures on a temp basis. Also, microdermabrasion is not very rosacea friendly, nor overexfoliation or exfoliating products.

Metrogel hasn't worked for me either. But now that I've toned down a lot of the redness this last week, I am trying again. And I'm going to flip my routine and use it at night instead of the morning.

Jeannine, did you ever use anything else to treat your rosacea?

i wouldn't use the metrogel for very long. I read where it temporily helps the skin but long term use somehow can make the skin look even worse. Reasons for this I do not completely know..therefore when I read that 2 years ago i stayed away from it. I agree that IPLs are the way to go.
