Hi I've been on this forum for the past week reading old topics about glycolic peels. I am very confused and I figured i would just make my own topic.
First I will start off saying i dont know much about this stuff, but what i do know is i have clogged pores and have tried everything to get rid of them except these peels. I want to know if these peels the real deal.
Will they get rid of my blackheads? If so, there seems to be so many different brands and percentages, Im really confused about which one i would get
please help |

Glycolic acid (alpha-hydroxy acid - AHA) will loosen up dead skin cells so they can be removed and not end up in your pores.
Salicylic Acid (beta-hydroxy acid - BHA)is better for blackheads because it actually penetrates the pore to get rid of excess oil and oily dirt, etc. in the pore.
It would be better for you to think about using a BHA product like Paula's Choice 2% lotion (cosmeticscop.com) or any other salicylic acid product. There are many out there. |

I have used alot of stuff with Salicylic Acid in it and all it ever did was dry out my skin. Unless this stuff online is different then stuff at like CVS i doubt it will work.
What about those pumpkin skin peels everyone loves? Dont those have both acids in them? |

i purchased a tca peel from platinumskincare.com for pigmentation correction and it worked great. they also carry both glycolic and salicylic acid peels in a variety of percents and sizes (including a sample size). |

I think the Pumpkin peel just has AHAs in it. Worth a try I think; it is a great product. Since you haven't used these products before, I would NOT start off with a strong peel, like from Platinum Skincare. It can be dangerous and you skin isn't used to these actives. If I were you, I would get AHA products you can use everyday...MD Formulations Cleanser and Lotion for example. Just once a day should be enough to start with. This is a great line, IMO. I have used the cleanser off and on for months and months now. I will always go back to this to keep my skin clear. As well, maybe try the Aspirin Mask, found in the DIY thread for clearing your black heads. You can use it every few days and it shouldn't dry out your skin. Keep in mind, congested or clogged areas will take a while to clear. It didn't get to be that way over night, and won't go away over night either. If, in a month of 2 you still want to try a glycolic peel, I think your skin will be better prepared; and you will have a better idea about your skin's reaction to these products.
On another note, drinking at least 2L of water a day, and making sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals (through either food or supplements) is essential for healthy, clear skin, IMO. Finally, maybe consider adding a C serum to your routine. PSF makes a good one...you can look at it at the same time you are checking out the pumpkin peel.
One more thing...I assume you use UV protection everyday anyway but, if you don't, make sure you start! AHAs will make you more sensitive and UV protection is essential when using AHAs. |

My dermotologist told me to eat more fish. Omega 3 oil is good for you because it can come out of your pores easier.
I noticed a difference and drink at least 1L of water per day.
Paula Begoun BHA is really good and if that does not work, go to your dermotoligists. I did, and was told to eat more fish, drink water, and he gave me Vitamin A Acid prescription (stronger then Paula's Choice BHA)
I hope this helps. |

i agree with faith, you shouldn't use either acid peels until your skin is accustomed to the actives. i suggested platinum skincare because you said you have already tried many products containing salicylic acid and were interested in the peels. they sell a variety of daily corrective/maintenance products as well. i use their glycolic face wash and find it to be comparable with the glycolic cleansers from md formulations and md forte.
the pumpkin peel contains both glycolic and salicylic acid. |

The Platinum Skincare cleanser is 10%, with a pH of 4.5. The MDF is 12%, with a pH of 3.8. MDF is going to give you better results, IMO. pH is really important when dealing with glycolic acid, and anything over 4 is not going to be that effective, as an exfoliant. Just my opinion... |
