I was reading throughout the forums and parabens were mentioned a few times. I decided to look it up and here is what I found:
Common Names: methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben
These synthetic preservatives are frequently used in cosmetics and personal care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, hair styling gels, nail creams, foundations, facial masks, skin creams, and deodorants. Parabens can be an ingredient in baby lotions, shampoos, and other personal care products for children.
Methyl and propyl parabens are also allowed for use as food preservatives in small quantities. They are considered “Generally Recognized As Safe” for food uses.
The chemical parabens is ranked as Yellow for Caution. We recommend that you limit exposure. |

Parabens are things that get knocked a lot, especially by those advocating natural skin care.
Though there isn't a lot of research on parabens, since most major cosmetics companies use them, they wouldn't want something damning to surface. Parabens, their biggest problem, are thought to mimic eostrogen activity - thus causing hormonal imbalances like breakouts, and long term theoretically thought to cause breast cancer.
It's hard to say if they cause direct irritation, as many products that have parabens, also have other chemicals, so you can't isolate what is the cause. And many natural lines also contain small amounts of parabens - definitely not enough to cause immediate irritation, otherwise they wuld not be used! |

I asked Darren (PSADHAKA) from PSF skincare about the use of parabens a while back and he explained it to me very well- I can't find the email though! Maybe we can get him to comemnt here.

I think we'd like to know an objection perspective on the debate for parabens!
Are we right to just say that parabens are entirely harmless, stable and cheap ingredient to use in cosmetics? Or are there much better alternatives?
Or are the real objections really unjustified because there is not enough data to support it? |

| Well, as preservatives go, parabens are relatively gentle & have a very low threshold for causing irritation or sensitivity in most individuals. That being said, it's up to tthe individual as to how much it matters in their products. As much as I would love to use a paraben-free product, I would worry too much about bacteria. But that's just my opinion & philosophy. |

This prompted me to check the ingredient lists for some Pevonia and MD products I use, to see if they have parabens (what doesn't, right?) Anyway, the lists here say some of the pevonia stuff contains various parabens...
But when I went and looked at some of the ingredient lists on the products (in my fridge), seems they've taken the parabens out of most of them. Hmmm, wonder what prompted that. Maybe they gave some of those recent studies some thought. Anyway, there's a big new tongue-twister ingredient added, so I have to go look that up. |

| The whole thing about parabens being estrogenic is blown out of proportion IMO. Parabens are no more estrogenic than other cosmetic additives that are considered "safe" & even "healthy",such as soy. Also the study where they found trace amounts of parabens present in cancerous breast tissue was a flawed study - they also found trace parabens in healthy breast tissue as well, but that finding was precluded from the study. |
