I bought Make up forever HD powder 2 weeks ago and so far I love it. I like it better than Bare Minerals Mineral Veil, which is what I used before. Basically it is a transparent mineral silica loose powder and its talc free. It feels really smooth, soft and the consistency is really fine. It feels and smells a little like baby powder. And a little goes a long way, which is nice on the wallet.

I have been searching for a powder to create more of a matte look, and this finally did that. It greatly reduces that oily, shiny look that most of us tend to get throughout the day. I don't have oily skin and I still get that look because I use Bare Minerals. It also reduces the appearance of lines and pore, because it doesn't settle into them. It helps keep my makeup on all day too, so no touch ups. There might be other silica powders out there. I think that it might be similar to Pure Luxe, but I haven't tried that brand.

It costs about $30, and I bought mine at Sephora but they were out for like 2 weeks. So I had them put it on hold for me when they got their next shipment. Just wanted to share.

I bought some as well at the recommendation of another thread. It works pretty well, but I did start getting little milia after the 3rd week and had to quit using it. I think it was the silica for me. Crying or Very sad I also found it didn't work as well in the lines and pores as I had hoped, but mine may be worse than yours. It does go a long way and smell good. It also does a good job of oil control as you said. My expectations had been pretty high though for this one as I had heard the praises of it sung at Sephora. They love it and can't keep it in stock!

I tried this on at Sephora. It's a very fine, white powder that does get rid of any oily shine. I put it on all over my face and left it on all day but it left my skin feeling dry so I didn't purchase it. This may be best for those with oily skin, mine is normal to dry. They did have it in stock at the Sephora I frequent and they have it in stock online as well.

This is a nice powder without much coverage, it just makes the face look very smooth. The oil absorption properties are above average but I find that it works best in combination with other powders.

If you want to try other alternatives, there is the Diorskin Extreme powder (translucent as well) which I really like. Also By Terry makes a range of very refined iridescent mill powders, available in various shades including white.

Also Aromaleigh and various mineral makeup companies do pure silica powders, they are just not as refined as MUFE. See MUA reviews under MUFE HD powder for alternatives.

The Makeup Forever HD powder is simple silica powder. The amount they sell is worth about ten cents. You can get the same thing from Pure Luxe, The Conservatorie, TKB Trading. Google "silica powder" plus "skin" or "makeup" or some such thing.

There is no reason in the world this product should cost $30. Outwit the devils. Wink

Annie....I hope that doesn't happen. I hate milia, but I tend to get them under my eyes occasionally. I am going to keep an eye out for that. Thanks for the alternative options ladies, once I run out I might check out the other companies. Especially if they are cheaper. Smile

It does sound like their are some good alternatives. I'll try one and see. Good luck yomama606, give a follow up and let me know in a few weeks how it did. I seem to be more prone to milia these days with a lot of products for sure, so it may not be just the powder.

Yeah I saw that at Sephora, but I got Cargo blu-ray powder instead. It is also good at blurring lines and matting.
It has a neutral color that works for me. It may not for some, so try before you buy.

I love this over revlon colorstay liquid foundation. It provides a great finish. However, it doesn't keep my skin matte as long as mac blot does. Would be very nice for those who are not an oil slick like me.

Aromaleigh, a company I personally love and have been ordering from for several years, has been garnering raves for their version - their Ultra Resolution finishing powder - it comes in clear, transparent - and two new ones: peaches and cream and english rose - see below for descriptions. They sound yummy. Full sizes are $13.95 and you can order samples. From the reviews I'm reading of it, it's a perfect dupe of MFE's powder. I'm going to try a sample of the peaches and cream. Sounds too good to pass up. Laughing

From the Aromaleigh website:

"We've also just added two shades with the slightest bit of glow, "peaches and cream" (a perfectly proper pinky peach) and "english rose" (a tender cool pink, like blushing cheeks). Both add only the tiniest perceptible glint of color, and sheer glow to the skin. The effect is incredibly delicate, but the finish is amazing"

Maria Very Happy

Thanks for the tip Sidda. I was actually able to find the powder from CoastalScents. It was 4 dollars for 1 oz and I paid 3 bucks for shipping. So I just got it today and I must say it feels exactly like the HD Powder from make up forever. When you apply it to your skin, it's so soft. Can't believe how much money I saved and I ended up getting more product.

Yes Simran, you can use it over your regular foundation and it creates a matte look. That is how I use it. However, if you don't use foundation you can use it as a translucent powder to reduce that oily shine some of us get during the day.

I really like the way it feels over my MMU, and since the gals have found so many great alternatives that are similar to the HD Powder....you can save $$ too.

I recently stepped over to the dark side and purchased some MUFE foundation (Mat Velvet +) --- for the first time in over 2 years, found mineral makeup just wasn't working for me now that it's very very hot and I spend more time in the heat. My mineral makeup was coming off in rivers and had to stop wearing makeup entirely. I really like MUFE Mat Velvet (review coming up in a couple weeks) but the idea that they're selling silica powder for 30 freaking bucks? No way, no how. I'll order it from TKB Trading company and mix it up with silk and pearl powder, thank you very much.

I just got that too and really like that it dosen't settle into pores and leaves a nice finish. Perfect color for me too...there's only one and it supposedly works for everyone. Not too sure about that.

I just got the HD powder in a GWP from MUFE.
It is a very small jar, but I think it is going to last me a while since you only need a small amount. At first I was a bit heavy handed and it made my skin look greyish and took away the glow. But then I realized I was using too much and now use the correct amount to achieve a silky smooth finish.
My skin color is tanned golden- more on the medium dark tone and the white powder does seem to adjust to it.

I finally got a sample of this from Sephora. It feels much smoother than my standard silk/pearl powder mix. MUCH! And it seems to give me a better finish than silk powder alone.

I'll likely order silica powder from an alternate source and mix it with silk powder to see how that works. As far as the pearl powder goes, I purchased from GOW and have found it's best used in pearl creams; the texture isn't fine enough to use as a setting powder. I tried to grind it with a marble mortar and pestle but still can't make it as fine as silk powder.

I'd be interested in hearing from ladies who've used both MUFE HD powder and alternate silica powders from other sources, any takers? Smile

P.S. I'm on the The Conservatorie website - http://www.theconservatorie.com/products/Silica_Microspheres-31-5.html

It's a little difficult to navigate, but under the Makeup Additives category, I'm finding Silica microspheres or Silicone microsheres. I want Silica as opposed to Silicone, don't I?

The particles in silica microspheres are measured between 10-14 microns.
The silicone microspheres are measured at 6 microns.

Does the larger number mean the particle size is smaller or larger?

Thanks in advance,

athena

I liked this well enough, but, I've decided that I prefer the loose Jurlique powders slightly more.

As a side note, the new Urban Decay pressed powder in the rockin' purple compact gives the same results as the HD loose powder. I love it!

The MUFE HD liquid foundation has been getting a lot of buzz over at makeupalley. Click on "Product Reviews" and you can see some of the before/after pics some of the Brave Ones have posted. Pretty impressive!!
I haven't tried it myself, but it's def on my list!

PS - I am told that Coastal Scents makes a silica powder that is $4.00 for 20g and is more finely milled even than MUFE HD Powder. Worth checking out anyway. I have the Pure_Luxe Silica powder and it works just fine - a little goes a very long way.
