I'm been invited to a Christmas work party for someone I'm dating. The dress code is "smart casual". What is that? The date thinks a dress would be great but that is not what 'smart casual' is to me. What do you think? |

I'd go with a skirt and a nice sweater or top.
A dress is ok, but not a cocktail one. Something simple that you'd go to work in...
My boyfriends work gets girls in business suits, some in jean skirts right up to ladies in formal sequin cocktail dresses!! I took the easy way out this year, i said i needed to study and didn't have time to buy a dress. |

Thanks Lianne.
I was thinking of going the skirt route but went shopping today and didn't find any that looked good. Plus I don't really wear skirts so it would sort of be a waste of $$$ (Rather spend it on skincare!!! )
I'm hoping to be able to get away with a nice pair of pants and dress it up with a fancier top & jewelery. |

I think a nice pair of slacks and a dressy top would totally fit the bill! |

Obsessed with fashion, I'm frustrated that I've never heard of "smart casual."
Anyway, I think pants and a festive top with sparkly jewelry would be perfect. You can't go wrong. Maybe a fun velvet scarf for added flair. |

maybe a nice cashmere or silk top with some nice sparkly jewels...That would work well!
Just stay away from those sweaters with the christmas trees beaded on them that my mom LOVES. ugh, those make me sick |

I call those "teacher" sweaters since all of my teachers growing up always wore them. I've sworn to myself that I will NEVER wear them. |

You can never go wrong with a black cashmere twin set. When they say casual, it almost sounds like jeans but dressy. But us Californians have slightly different outlook on what is casual compared to the midwest and east coast.
I'd wear some fabulous spiky heel boots in a netural, good boot-cut jeans, that black twinset, and a silk scarf with a light background with some neutral and black in the design. Tie the scarf around the neck like a turtleneck and wear pearls underneath. If you need to break out the pearls, just remove the scarf and say you were warm >; )
Sort of a Tommy Hilfiger meets the Tablots/Nordstrom woman - the classic and clean with a smidge of fun. Very Audrey Hepburn or Gwynth Paltrow. |

If you're slim I'd wear black slim pant tapered at the ankle with a V-neck nice knit top and fun jewelry.
If you're hippy I like the suggestion of the bootcut jeans with the high heel sandels. |
