I've been making this recipe for about 6 months, and because it has a great many fans (myself included), I decided to share it for you all here at EDS.
It's moisturizing, but light enough to sink in quickly. I use it head to toe, hence, the 16oz quantity. I also send batches to my SIL, who claims "it calmed her Rosacea like nothing else." (I'm not making any claims, just passing on what she said!)
This recipe can be easily tweaked to change or add other compatible actives, and can also be "thickened" or "thinned" with easy adjustments to the water, oils + cetyl alcohol.. (eazy peazy!)
DIY Creamy Lotion/Souffle For Head to Toe, 16oz (posted 2-22-13)
Water Phase (Heat to 120F)
Distilled Water 60% (272.16gm)
Aloe Juice 15% (68.04gm)
Glycerin 3% (13.61gm)
Oil Phase (Heat to 120F)
Oils of choice 8% (36.29gm) **note below**
E-Wax 4% (18.14gm)
Cetyl Alcohol 2% (9.07gm)
Cool Down (active) Phase
DL Panthenol (B5) 2% (9.07gm)
Niacinamide (B3) 3% (13.61gm)
CoQ10 1% (4.54gm)
Allantoin 1% (4.54gm)
Preservative of choice 1% (4.54gm) I sometimes adjust this to allow for .02% DS EDTA, depending on my actives!
In small saucepans heat the oil/water phases separately to 120F..
Decant 1oz of each into 2 shot glasses and set aside. (You will use this for your 'actives'.) When they have cooled to just warm, add the water soluble actives to the water (panthenol, niacinamide, preservative).. And add the CQ10 to the oil. (You will add the contents of both of these glasses to your emulsified and cooled lotion. The Allantoin gets mixed into the finished product as a last step in the mixing.
Now for the magic (fun) part
Using a nice big glass bowl that's been thoroughly cleansed and santitized, pour your heated water into the bowl. Slowly drizzle in your heated oil phase, while using the stick blender to mix. Mix, mix, mix, (the longer the better), until your creamy lotion starts to thicken and cool down. (Too make the process faster, you can put this bowl into a larger bowl, that is filled with ice cubes!)
Once you have a nice cooled down lotion, it's time to add the actives (from the shot glasses)..Mix the actives into the shot glasses as explained above and stir well. Dump em into your emulsion, and mix, mix, mix.. Now just sprinkle on the Allantoin and mix it in thoroughly. Now you can put it in your containers of choice, and allow to fully cool before sealing. It refrigerates wonderfully, so will allow you to decant smaller batches as needed. **Note** If you want a true lotion that will go in a pump bottle, you'll need to adjust the water/oil amounts to make it a little thinner, and pour into the bottle immediately after you're done mixing! It thickens as it cools.
**I'm a mixing ho, and my result is a creamy product, that has the consistency of a souffle almost. It will be a lovely pale yellow (CoQ10). It's extremely lightweight, and really just sinks right into my skin.**
**Note about the oils**
I have tons (yeah, I'm an oil ho too.. ).. When I make large quantity products, I try to stick with oils that are both beneficial to the skin, AND work to keep my product a little more (naturally) preserved.. For this recipe I have found the following to be just all around great!
In decending order I went with;
Almond (always a great base for oil phase..luv)
Jojoba (never expires!)
Meadowfoam Seed (never expires!)
Soybean (lots of vit E!)
Walnut
Evening Primrose
*For scenting I'd recommend you don't commit the entire 16oz to any one scent unless you love it.. I'm a fickle sort, and like to scent on a whim (to a small decanted amount), or leave unscented altogether, which is mostly what I prefer.. In any event, you would add your scenting essential oils last, and I wouldn't recommend more than 2 or 3 drops in a couple of ounces.. (a little goes a VERY long way!) Hint: When it's hot as hell here, a few drops of peppermint EO is fabulous in this..lol!
Hope you guys like it, and don't be afraid to experiment with your own choice of actives, once you get to see how easy this (simple) recipe comes together.. I've also added Alpha Lipoic Acid and Silk Peptides to this one, and it's also very nice.. Tweak to your hearts content, but I'd suggest making it as is to get your feet wet FIRST... |

Hi Kassy, thank you for this nice recipe!
Also, I wanted to ask you or anyone else with info:
1) If I mix pure shea butter and glycerin, would I need a preservative( anti microbial/anti fungal? I know that individually these 2 ingredients dont need to be preserved, I hoping it ll remain the same after I mix em up.
2) Same question if I mix a small amount of sea kelp ferment with shea butter. SKB already contains phenoxyethanol bu t wondering if it would be enough when its mixed up with shea butter.
Thank you |

Kassy you had some simple formula posted *Somewhere* - It was CeraVe and an oil? and something else. I know, I know I'm a big help.
I can't even remember what it was for. I do know I wanted to try it. Help. |

Thank You, Kassy, I will need to collect some courage and try it. Can I use Aloe vera skin gel instead of the aloe juice?
Thanks again for the help and advice! |

Sounds wonderful. I don't DIY so if someone wants to bottle this PM me and I will send money.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend. It was summer here but you wouldn't believe it considering how the weather was for the past week. |

WOW Kassy this recipe looks great. I have actually been looking for some body souffle recipes.
I think this has been asked above but do you think I could add in some whipped Shea Butter and Sea Kelp Bioferment as a final phase? |

You could definitely *tweak* it to accomodate shea butter and SKB, just keep in mind it will be thicker and creamier.
You have *wiggle* room by reducing the "aloe juice" to incorporate say 2 or 3 % SKB. And you can reduce the "oils" to 5% and add 3% shea butter instead.
Play, play, play... That's what it's all about. |

Yes! Just be sure it's either from a DIY supplier, or if store bought, that it's 99% pure and the color is clear. |

Hey Sis, could you be thinking about the "hand cream/barrier repair" I posted recently?
2oz CeraVe Cream (in the big tub)
1oz Aquaphor
1oz Mixed Oils
After making this again the other night, I found it a bit too heavy for my hands, but it's fantastic on my feet..
Better for hands;
3oz CeraVe Cream
1/2 oz Aquaphor
1/2 oz Mixed Oils |

| Bless your heart for sharing your recipe! I might try this if I start making lotion again. I made my own a couple of times using a recipe I got from The Dish forum, uses honey though and I've since been trying to live a completely vegan life. |

Thanks Kassy for helping me track this down. I was indeed thinking about the "hand cream/barrier repair". And now a recipe for hands and feet - all the better. |

The bolded is definitely what I am looking for. The skin on my legs is like the Sahara, especially in winter. |
