PS--This has nothing to do with Lipglossbaby's recent thread on tanning. I wanted to post this last night, but I'm lazy! Razz

Here's my rant for the day:

I just wanted to question why everyone is so obsessed with being a different color than they are? I know that alot of people think that they look "healthier" with a tan, but I think all you need is a little bronzer/blush to achieve that. I am so pale that my undertones are actually grey!!! Laughing But I love it! I, and alot of the guys I know, think that there is nothing more appealing than dark hair with fair skin and rosy cheeks. I know it's a personal preference, but I guess I don't get it. Not that many years ago, it was considered to be regal and beautiful to be fair. Time's change I guess. I don't have a problem with people who sunless tan, but with all we know about cancer and premature aging, why risk regular tanning?

I co-owned a tatto shop for a while, and as standard shop procedure, we would take the driver's licences of EVERYONE, even if they were 60. A woman walked up to the counter, and said that she was getting a tatto for her birthday. She looked about 35, dark and wrinkly, but when I looked at her license, she had just turned 18!!!! Shock

On the flip side of the coin, you have Michael Jackson bleaching himself into a ghost. Why can't we be happy with the skin we're in? We all have things we would like to change, but why something so trivial? If you have acne, or horrible scars or wrinkles, feel free to try to remedy that, as long as you don't do anything that could jeopardize your health. I am all about self improvement, but there should be limits.

Sorry if it seems that I'm up in arms about the subject, but I lost my grandpa to skin cancer because he always worked in the sun with no protection. My mother for the sake of vanity, tans herself silly. She had to have a cancerous lesion removed. Thank god, she's ok.

PLEASE LADIES, YOU'RE ALL BEAUTIFUL, LOVE YOURSELVES FOR WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!!

I totally agree with you. Many years ago, when I discovered that I need to be happy with myself, I then accepted who I was, and what I am. I stopped tanning, discovered sunblock, Cetaphil...
I looked better then ever, lost weight and got a guy. I think the first step to anything is saying it is okay to be you.

When I do some volunteer work at women's shelters, the fist step these women knew was that the conditions that they were living in was not right. They get a break, some rest, reflect and get free guidance. Once they come back to 'this is what I deserve' that is when they have the strength to stand up for themselves and their children.

I know you meant the beauty aspect, mper, but is somewhat the same thing.

Great thread!

I like being quite pale.

I think pale skin with some blush looks lovely.

I am very pale and do look healthier when I have a bit of colour on me. Having said that, I wear sunblock every day and go to great lengths to protect myself from the sun. I started doing that years ago after seeing some really young "surfer chicks" down at the Gold Coast and seeing how leathery their skin was....

Hear! Hear! I love being pale and embraced this part of me ages ago. Sure I like the golden look I get in the summer time, the rosy cheeks, the healthy glow, but like mper1327 said, you can achive that with a good bronzer which is what I do when I want to feel a little rosier. I used to dye my hair blonde as well so my skin wouldn't look so pale but just last year I changed it back to my natural golden brown and have to say I love the contrast with my fair skin. Sometimes I wish I could even be fairer! I think the look is so angelic and fresh. And you're right abut the ageless look. I look much younger than I am (thanks to my lack of sun damage) and people still think I'm fresh out of school! LOL I love it. For all you ladies out there who feel a little down in the dumps about being pale, keep that chin up, fair skin is beautiful and timeless!

I'm naturally quite pale and I've never really enjoyed sun tanning as I don't tan easily, so it gets boring lying there in the sun for hours. And fake tan is so hard to maintain! So I've just accepted that I'm pale. My mother always tells me to go out and get a tan, but why bother. I don't see why tanned skin would be better than pale.

I'm also irritated when white people criticize the people of darker skintones who try to bleach their skin and at the same time they do everything they can to make their own skin appear darker. Talk about double standards!

PS. I think that Michael Jackson has had chemical depigmentation because of his vitiligo. I wouldn't blame him for that.

Another thing: I used to have a huge complex about my boobs, and wanted to have them inflated since I was 15. I am seriously too small to fit into even an AA cup. Extra room in a training bra, mind you! Laughing But now, at 27, I'm finally happy with myself. I think we all have a concept of what we should look like force fed to us when we're young. I BLAME BARBIE!!!!!!!! I used to wonder why my generation was more prone to eating disorders, plastic surgery, fake tanning, and bleaching their hair blonde. It is all BARBIE'S fault!!!! She was our image of what "real" beauty is when we were growing up. Tall, skinny, leggy, 38DD-12-35, blonde, big boobs.

I think we should all start a class-action lawsuit against the Mattel Corporation for emotion diress!!! Bad Grin

I have finally accepted myself for who I am. Yes, there are some bumps in the road when I admire an actresses "perfect" breasts, but then I remind myself that beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I totally agree. I like being pale and my skin is in much better shape since I stopped tanning long ago. Sure, I think people with nice healthy-looking tans look, well, healthy in the summer, but if I look closely, most times even younger women have the beginning of bad skin showing -- tan or not.

I am Swedish and most women here love to get dark either by going on a vacation/holiday elsewhere or by laying under tanning beds for long periods of time. Guess what? It shows. Swedish women in their 40's and 50's have chests and necks that look like leather bags. It is awful! Women here are very fair by nature, why mess with that? Ick. It might look sexy when one is 20 but when your chest looks like it's covered in cancer-induced goosebumps/pimples sexy IT IS NOT!

I love being pale. I colour my hair, eyebrows and lashes darker to bring out my pale skin and green eyes. Am I a sickly pale? No. I use Dr. Haushcka's liquid toner for that and it gives me just the right amount of glow. Cool

Shock

That should be used as an advert against sunbaking.
That is a vile description (which is very good IYSWIM).

I agree. I used to hate how pale I was. As as teenager and young adult, I spent way too much time in the sun trying to change that. Now, I've come full circle and I've embraced the paleness of my skin. Smile

When we used to go to biaritz as kids my aim was to come back looking as tanned a possible (even on my face - I shudder at the thought now).

I am pale too, and I do love it! When I was young everyone loved going to beach to tan, I hated it. I don't tan, I get red and burned and then white again. Since I hate getting red and burned I have used sunscreen since I was in my early teens. Very Happy

The only downside being pale is that every imperfection in the skin really show! Very annoying, especially since "pale" make up is hard to find.

I'm with ya'll!

I've often thought Mother Nature was a better colorist than most of us who mess with our natural coloring.

The thing is, I don't avoid the sun, I just wear sunblock. I can't live without sunshine. I do wear sunglasses, sunblock and usually a baseball cap.

I LOVE being pale!!!!

Arizona has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the country, yet it surprises me how many of these women (and guys too, but mostly women) tan like mad.
There is a tanning salon right next to campus that is always super busy. One day I was walking buy and this girl came out looking like a lobster. She was crying to her boyfriend about being in the booth too long. Her boyfriend said "Well, she TOLD you that was going to be too long." I have to admit I didn't feel sorry for her.

I know two people who have had skin cancer before they even turned 20. And with the type of damage the UV rays do to your face, I'd much rather be pale (or if I had to have color, use a self tanner) than give myself wrinkles and aging earlier than normal. Someone I used to work with looked like she aged 5-10 years in just a couple of years once she started working outside long days. I saw a picture of her that apparently was taken only about 4 years ago, but she looked sooo young compared to the way she does now. She looks like she's in her upper 30s, when she just turned 30.

Boy, is that the truth. I love my skin tone, but imperfections show like I put neon signs pointing to them, and finding makeup that matches is a royal PITA.

I really wish I could agree, but I'm afraid that I actually look very drawn and ill with my natural skin colour. Mind you, I never sunbathe (couldn't even if I wanted to as I get sunstroke at the drop of a hat) and always use sun protection.

Most of the time, I use facial fake tan. Even when wearing it, people don't notice because I'm so pale. They just tell me that I'm looking "really well" (as opposed to the "Are you feeling okay?"s that I get otherwise).

However, I do think that very pale skin can look absolutely beautiful - on other people, just not on me. Crying or Very sad

I totally agree! My mom and sister worship the sun and always make fun of me because while they lounge in the pool and tan I sit under an umbrella and read a book (with my spf 55 on!). I am so pale...and my skin is olive so I look very green/yellow and I have dark hair which makes me look even more pale. Every once in a while I use fake tan on my face but I end up exfoliating it all off bc it makes my skin feel weird...like my face cant breathe.

I've heard that Michael Jackson didn't bleach himself, and that he actually suffers from a disease that makes him lose the melanin in his skin. Is that not true?

I naturally have medium skin tone. I am never pale and am happy with my colour. I don't tan and use sunscreen religiously as I don't want premature aging. I am now 28 and don't even have a line yet. Seems to me that what I have been doing has paid off.

Meg White (from the White Stripes) is pale and she seems to wear pale makeup (gotta love brands like Manic Panic). I think she's far prettier than Barbie. But that's just my personal preference. You can always use self tanning lotion and a bronzer to be a bit darker. And I don't think you have to overdo it. Just a little bit darker than your natural colour will look great and natural.
