I'm looking for a really good quality normal facial moisturizer for normal skin.

I want it for the following:

1) Buffering with Retin a .25

2) General use

I've tried coconut oil but this makes me break out.

I'm not keen on emu oil.

What ingredients make a great facial moisturizer for normal skin?

What products you've used which you are very fond of/ most effective and why?

Do you actually need a separate moisturiser? You might use either a sunscreen with hydrating properties such as Devita, or a night treatment serum with moisturising properties like KinNiaNag (niacinamide and lecithin strengthen the skin barrier).

I was going to say the same thing! Smile
The meow lotions are super basic and nourishing. They just contain some good oils - no actives.

I use Tazorac gel and I use La Roche Posay's Toleriane Soothing Protective Skincare lotion before I apply the gel. Their Toleriane line is very good for all skin types, especially skin sensitized by retinoids.

A lot of people say that their Toleriane Ultra is better as an all around product, day and night, but I love both. I recommend you start with Ultra because it is so light and very moisturizing/protecting whereas the Soothing Skincare lotion can be greasy for some. You can get them pretty cheap on Amazon.

I think that Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is pretty nice.

If you like oils, many recommend hemp oil with retin a. Search eds, there is a big rave forum about hemp oil. You could also try mixing a drop of hemp oil with a drop of aloe or ha serum.

I tried coconut oil and found the exact same thing!

I too am on retin a so know what it's like trying to find a good moisturiser. Personally I am very fond of the Dr Hauschka Skincare line and use the rose day cream in the morning. I found that putting it on damp skin makes it effective otherwise it seems to sit on the surface and my skin feels tight.

As Firefox mentioned the Devita Sunscreen which is already combined with moisturising properties may work well for you. It's certainly nice not to have to put another layer of product on one's face particularly in the summer. I use it sometimes but it has broken me out in the past and I am not convinced it is moisturising enough for my skin which is pretty dry because of the retin a.

I agree, Devita is not good for my skin while using a retinoid. It was redness central for me.

I use Retin-A .05% and have found, for me, the absolute perfect way to apply it. I dot the retin-a on, then put a small blob (maybe about 2 pea-sized amounts) of this aloe vera gel: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/LIL010/ItemDetail
in my hands and rub in the retin-a. I've had zero irritation this way, and at the ripe old age of 54, my face is finally staying clear. Smile

There is no such thing as "normal" skin - if only.

As for Crystal Richardson's recommendation I would further add just because something is natural doesn't always mean its good or better.

Moisturizers is used to make your skin smooth and soft. Moisturizers are available everywhere. However, it is also possible to make homemade moisturizers. My personal favorite is Dermaxsol. Specifically formulated as a facial moisturizer, Dermaxsol Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF-30 nourishes and hydrates your skin, skin is left feeling softer and smoother.

I like Valmont DNA serum. Valmont Hydra3 Regenetic Concentre is also really nice.

A more affordable option is one of the Dr Renaud rich emulsions. For example, this one:
