ww.cosmeticsinfo.org
This is a relatively new site set up by the Cosmetic and Toiletry information to share extensive safety information on cosmetic products and ingredients. I've surfed through it extensively and it is very, very good. I would recommend it highly. Here is a description of what the site is all about:
WWW.COSMETICSINFO.ORG FACT SHEET
What iswww.cosmeticsinfo.org?
• www.cosmeticsinfo.org is a consumer information Web site that serves as an in-depth resource for consumers to learn the facts and the science behind cosmetics and personal care products. It is a useful tool that will continue to be expanded and updated to provide consumers with important information about the products they purchase for themselves and for their families. The site gives consumers user-friendly access to current, factual, and scientifically-based information on cosmetic and ingredient safety.
Who developed the site?
• The Personal Care Products Council and its member companies have created the consumer information Web site and will continue to add and update content to reflect the latest scientific information.
Why was the site developed?
• We believe consumers have the right to know what ingredients are in the products they use. The Web site was developed to give consumers easier, user-friendly access to this information so they can make informed decisions about personal care products and understand how our companies go about the safety assessment process, how cosmetics are regulated, and how to read a cosmetic or personal care product label. The site also provides the consumer with links to other authoritative bodies and references to scientific research and studies.
What information can be found on the site?
• The Web site is an in-depth resource that we will continue to expand and update based on the latest scientific research. With more than 1,600 ingredients already listed on this site, consumers can find safety information for the vast majority of ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products on the market today. The site is divided into two primary sections; safety information pages and an ingredient database. Consumers can easily find information on:
How to read labels on cosmetics and personal care products.
How cosmetics and personal care products are regulated—in both the U.S. and Europe.
The extensive process companies go through to ensure the safety and efficiency of cosmetic and personal care products.
• The site also includes information from the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, a non-profit group of independent, expert scientists and physicians launched in 1976 with the support of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) that thoroughly reviews and assesses the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in an open manner and publishes its results in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
• Consumers can find on the site a timeline of the evolution of the cosmetics industry and cosmetics regulation. The history featured on the site shows both a national and international perspective and offers consumers the opportunity to learn about the origins of different products and the laws governing the use of these products.
How can the industry-sponsored site be an objective source of information on personal care products?
• Our goal in creating this site was to provide objective scientifically-based information about product and ingredient safety. As a service to consumers, we have included numerous links on the site to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other authoritative bodies as well as references to scientific research.
What kinds of features does the site offer?
• Consumers can access VIDEOS that offer an inside, behind-the-scenes look into how personal care product companies ensure product safety.
• The site allows users to easily BROWSE for information by product category from up to 13 classified groups of personal care products.
• For more detailed information, consumers can type in a specific ingredient name, product type or issue in the home page’s SEARCH ENGINE.
• Consumers can reference an extensive GLOSSARY that defines terms used throughout the website.
• Visitors to the site will also find LINKS to other authoritative bodies for consumers seeking additional resources and/or information, a detailed SITE-MAP to help navigate the site, and answers to FAQs on cosmetic products, ingredients, and safety. |
