Shaving doesn't make hair grow back thicker, there's no physiological system to account for it.

It does make it appear thicker though, because the hair follicle is flat, as opposed to tapered.

A man's beard will become thicker as he shaves it, not because he shaves it...but because of puberty and hormonal changes.

I love the Epicare knockoff that uses the threading principle.

Do a search here on EDS with Epicare in it and you will find more info and feedback from others.

Here's one such thread:
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=22256&highlight=epicare

You can get an Epicare knockoff for cheap on Ebay.

Here are two videos that will show you how to use the Epicare knockoff device:

My own opinion about shaving. I don't think it makes hair grow in coarser or more rapidly. I think hormones -- especially testosterone levels -- are the cause of women who have "beards". If you have hair issues like CMAYC's sister, you should get your hormone levels checked out. You may have something like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) ... If so, look into holistic ways of treating it as those seem to have the best results. BTW, I have PCOS, so I am speaking from experience.

Ok..I gotta jump in here about the shaving your face discussion. I started a thread on it a while back. I am NOT a proponent of shaving your face to get rid of hair. For that I would wax or do electrolysis or some of the other new devices (that I'm not familiar with.) I AB-SO-FRIGGIN-LUTELY think shaving your face is EXTREMELY beneficial if you don't have a hair problem there. I've been doing it 14 years (since age 41) and it has been my saving grace. I only regret that I didn't heed my dermatologist advice 10+ years earlier when he suggested to me (I thought it was insane to say the least Shock .) Now I know better. It's the cheapest, easiest and best kept beauty secret in around. Shhh

Again, for facial hair, I highly recommend an epicare knockoff device.

A reputable seller on Ebay -- I've bought from this seller multiple times (1st for myself; then for others as gifts):
http://myworld.ebay.com/kakahealthcare/

The listing is titled:
MANUAL FACIAL HAIR REMOVER THREADING FOR MAKE UP *DIY**
Price $3.99 + .54 S&H

I see other sellers listing it for even cheaper but I've personally had good experience with Kakahealthcare.

Be sure to check out the videos on how to use the device:
http://www.facialhairthreading.com/
http://www.thinkbeauty.co.uk/demovideo.html

The knockoff device just has pictures on the back of the packaging and instructions in an Asian language...

You'll get used to the wrist action and it'll work like a charm! I do it while watching TV. No need to look in the mirror...

Oh, on shaving the face as mountaingirl does for exfoliating - it works!
Check out her thread and some others on it at:

What she's talking about is a DIY form of dermaplaning:

Do any of you think Tend Skin will help?

What was I thinking? I don't have but peach fuss on my face. My experiment went very wrong.

NEVER put an epilator to your face!!!!

Oh Winnie! Bless your heart but it sounds so much like something I'd do which is why I stay away from those gadgets. I think you've got some sort of irritation. I'd do a light layer of something for irritation and maybe something healing on top. I'm not a huge emu oil fan but I keep it around for booboos and I think this is a BOOBOO of the highest order.

I would also suggest to try some neosporin, and then some Emu oil.

Good luck,
Lucy.

Hi Winnie - DEFINITELY give Tend Skin a try. We used it at both the spa and medspa and it works great. I know you're not going to use it on your face again, but for those of you who are, apply Tend Skin prior to your hair removal and then again afterwards. Winnie, yours should clear up quickly with it.

Oh no! Sounds awful! It really does remind me of some stuff I've tried on my face to get rid of unwanted hair. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but shaving really is the safest and easiest solution.

I hope it heals soon! Try putting some aloe vera on it, maybe that'll help. When I used to wax my upper lip, immediately after removing the wax residue with the oil and then washing off the oil, I would put a thick layer of painkilling antibacterial ointment on it (the first aid stuff you put on a cut). That would make the redness and irritation go away faster.

Winnie calm down, it will go away.

The same exact thing happened to my legs the first time I used an epilator. The face is very sensitive to begin with, but keep in mind you use Vit C serum every day, and that thins the skin over time.

If you have Maalox in the house, apply some to your face with a cotton ball. It's an ant-acid, and is remarkable for healing skin irritations like this. (I can't tell you how many times I used this in the NICU with 1 lb babies!)

Don't use any topicals for a couple of day, or anything with fragrance, and by no means use your Clarisonic.

Just keep it all simple, and bathe your skin with cool water a couple of times per day.

ETA: Please don't put any topicals on your face at all, not even sunscreen. NO CHEMICALS! Give it a day or two to heal.

Oh goodness, sorry that happened! If you have any Beta Oat Glucans, I think that might help calm down your skin. It will probably pass real fast. Definitely go with the allergic reaction to some product excuse(how about Clinique, its pretty nasty stuff!)
