I bought a kit from Sally's Beauty Supply last month and tinted my own lashes. The kit did a half decent job, although the dyes that are permitted to be sold these days aren't nearly as strong and effective as the one my stylist used the one and only time I had my lashes tinted professionally....
I had no trouble using the DIY tinting kit the first time last month, but last night I decide it was time to touch up my lashes (remember, the growth cycle of an eyelash is 28-30 days, so your lashes are constantly "recycling" themselves) and I had a BIG problem!! Maybe it was because I was half distracted (watching the season premiere of the West Wing), or maybe it was because I didn't re-read the instructions this time because I still remembered the steps to follow from the first use. But somehow I managed to get dye all over my lower eyelid and on the delicate under-eye area, even though I applied the coat of Vaseline, as per instructions, just like last time. Jesus, I almost had a heart attack!! Fortunately, the do include a stain remover in the DIY tinting kit, but I had to scrub the hell out the skin around my eye in order to remove all of the dye and now the skin under my left eye still looks really red/irritated and feels completely raw. OUCH!! Once I'd finally managed to get the dye off my skin, I decided I'd had enough excitement for one evening and decided to abort trying to perform the ritual on my other eye.
Anyway, the moral of this story is: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM TO THE LETTER AND MAKE SURE YOU CAN DO THE PROCEDURE WHEN YOU CAN BE COMPLETELY FOCUSED when you're using any DIY lash tinting or perming kit. Seriously, ladies!! I don't want to hear that one of us accidentally blinded ourselves in our quest for the perfect looking lashes!
If you want to know more about the horror stories from women who have had procedures done to their eyelashes, check out this link: http://www.beautytech.com/articles/permlash.htm
As a general FYI to those thinking of tinting their lashes at home, here is a list from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of eyelash tinting kits that are illegal to be imported or used in the U.S. because they are so dangerous (numerous cases of blindness and a couple of women have even died following adverse reactions to the use of these kits):
• Refecto Cil Dr. Olbrich's Combinal
• Andora
• Henna Gora
• Permalash
• Continental Eyelash and Eyebrow Dye
• Elle Colour (or Elle Hair Color or New Elle)
• Pialan Hair Dye
• Belmacil Color
And finally, here is the list of the most dangerous, banned ingredients in eyelash tinting kits...it is highly recommended that you do NOT purchase any DIY lash tinting kits which contain one or more of these ingredients, or you might end up with a helluva lot more problems than you bargained for!!
• isopropanol
• thiosulfate
• surfactants
Ladies -- just please be careful...you may not appreciate how precious your eyesight is until you accidentally lose it.
And now that I have depressed everyone, I shall bid you all a fond adieu!

Does anyone know if they make a DIY lash tinting kit that comes in burgundy or eggplant (dark purple)? |
I searched for this before settling on the blue-black. There is a company called Belmacil that makes Purple-Black, but I have not been able to find it here and I don't know if they make kits or if you have to buy individual ingredients.... |
I will research this Belmacil purple/black tint and report my findings at once, Captain Mabsy!
...Although with the way my luck is running, it’ll probably be one of those lash tint kits that contains that dangerous Reflectocil (or whatever it was called) ingredient that is banned because it caused blindness for many of those who used it.... Stay tuned for further reports! |
