I used a skincare line for about 3 years that contained bee propolis as it main ingredient. My skin did exceptionally well with it. The propolis used in this line came from Australia.
Bee propolis is anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-microbial. The anti-microbial factor makes it very effective in fighting acne.
Bee propolis is said to have 150 components, with the flavonoid components accounting for a significant percentage of it's weight.
I really liked the skincare, the propolis and honey soap was great for the bath and acts like a natural deodorant soap.
The bee propolis gel caps got rid of my allergies for 3 years. I think my body adjusted to them and they no longer seem to be as effective.
Probably one of the best things was how the bee propolis toothpaste healed my gums. At one time I had pockets in my gums registering a 7 (you know how they measure that when you get your teeth cleaned.) Ideal is 1 or 2. After using the bee propolis toothpaste for a few months and taking a mineral supplement, my "pockets" now register all 1's and 2's with a very occasional 3.
Benefits that my book on propolis list that could be good for your skin include, soothing inflammation, enhances collagen and elastin formation, heals blemishes, accelerates tissue regeneration.
Bee propolis also comes in liquids that can be used like a liquid bandaid to seal out germs while healing. It comes in a spray that is tremendous for sore throats.
Depending on it's source, propolis may include Vitamins A, C, E, and the B complex, linoleic acid and various minerals and a rich supply of amino acids.
Use of propolis for healing dates back to the time of Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.).

To my earlier post I should add that Bee Propolis from Australia is the most desired here in Japan. I wonder what makes the Aussie stuff so special?
I know that I will definately HAVE to go propolis shopping when I go home next week. Wish I had some now.. I woke up with a sore throat and I can feel myself gonig downhill quick as the day wears on. YUK! |
What I was told about why the Australian propolis is preferred is that Australia has the cleanest environment in the world. The propolis is made when the worker bees gather tree saps and mix them with their own secretions. The resulting mixture, propolis, is used to coat the inside of the hive. Propolis keeps the hive pure and free from infection while providing highly effective protection for it's residents. Neat story: Rodents looking for food sometimes get into the hive. The bees sting it to death and then encase it with propolis. They can't remove it from the hive and the body encased in the pure propolis can last for as much as 5 years without decay.
Now back to the trees in Australia and you. You want the propolis you use to be pure and free of environmental pollution. There are places other than Australia, such as in Europe and Russia and northern parts of the U.S, but Australian propolis is considered best.
The book I have is called Propolis Power Plus and it's written by Carlson Wade with Joan A Friedrich, Ph.D It's a Keats Good Health Guide and can usually be purchased in health food stores that sell publications. Lots of tremendously interesting info there.
I can also make a recommendation for knocking out that sore throat. I would definitely look for propolis spray, for one. It seems to deaden the throat and it also coats the throat to keep anymore bacteria from proliferating. A sore throat is just the result of bacteria collecting and multiplying in that area.
Another great zapper is aloe vera juice or drink. You can drink a quality aloe vera at the onstart of a cold or flu and drink an ounce several times through the day. If you catch it early, it will never come to fruition. Right now, my allergies are trying so hard to take hold. Lot of mold in the air here now. I'm drinking an ounce of papaya flavored aloe with two ounces of a mineral drink I have that also has 1000 mg of Vitamin C. I'll probably drink another before I go to bed tonight. Everyone thinks "Yuk" when you say to drink aloe vera because they assume it is slimy. But, it's not and some can taste quite good. One thing you always want to look for in your aloe drinks is the seal of the International Aloe Science Council on the label. That certifies that the aloe was processed within 7 hours of being picked to preserve efficacy and that it is cold processed and is pure aloe. A lot of the aloes you buy in the stores says "98% aloe". All that means is that whatever aloe is in it, is 98% aloe and 2% water. But, it means nothing about what percentage of the entire drink is aloe and what percentage is water or how it was processed.
Well, enough of that. Hope you find your propolis and duck that sore throat! :-&
