I am actually experimenting with different topicals under the mask (strips now that I have those that Kassy posted about!). Want to see if I can use this method to penetrate products.

sorry to bump this old thread, but I am hoping someone can answer regarding N/L pinching. How is the pinching along the line? The image demonstrating has been removed. thanks.

Shiseido sells "facial cotton" similar to what is described in the book, for about USD $10.

Actually, Shiseido pads are pretty much like what she describes. $8 in Sephora. Does anyone know the difference between these pads and normal round cotton pads? Other than regular pads cannot be stretched.

Also what if you do not wet the pads before putting lotion on them? I tried using dry pads with just the lotion on it and it worked pretty well. Except that I used more lotion that way.

My guess is that regular round cotton pads will just have more fluff if you try to pull them apart. There really doesn't seem to be any reason why one couldn't use cotton pads instead of a special facial cotton for a lotion mask, except for just the reason you stated: the pads would end up absorbing more product. It seems that Saeki is just an economical sort who's trying to help people stretch out their beauty dollar.

Especially, with NARS hydrating lotion being so expensive ( around 60 CAD ).

I'm really amazed with this idea of using cotton pads so I now try every hydrating liquid I have. Yesterday I used pads with Collagen Extract and results are phenomenal , it's like applying a Collagen Mask.

Thayers Rose Petal Alcohol free Toner looks like it could work for the lotion mask.

Ingredients: Purified water, aloe barbadensis leaf (certified organic filet of aloe vera), glycerin (vegetable), fragrance (natural rose) hamamelis virginiana (thayers® proprietary un-distilled witch hazel) extract, rosa centifolia (rose) flower water, citric acid, citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, and tocopheryl (vitamin e) acetate.

12 oz for $6.25 on Vitacost. I am thinking of adding some green tea extract to as well. Any thoughts?

I use this method only when I have bottles of toner that I need to use up quickly Embarassed Do not let it dry too much before taking it off or the skin would start to lose moisture instead.

I prefer to get those pre-soaked and sold in individually wrapped packets, as the quality of the cloth (thicker) and the serum (more syrupy than watery) is better at hydrating the skin. A good one would be Cosmed or Silk Whitia.

I think that's why Chizu Saeki recommends leaving it on for only three minutes (unless you're doing it in the bath).

I actually soak my cotton in white tea instead of water before I apply the toner/lotion to the cotton. If I were going to add green tea to the toner, I would use a green tea extract.

I started using the lotion masks about 2 weeks ago inspired by Chizu Saeki's book and the great posts here!

I am using L'oreal Age Perfect Toner, which is only £2.45 in the UK at the moment, along with cotton sheets from Muji. The sheets are £2.50 for 60 pieces which can be sectioned into 4 so enough for a whole mask. You can get them online. I'm in the UK but I think Muji has a worldwide site (not sure if there are Muji shops in USA but there are quite a few in the UK). they also sell paper face masks and eye masks, both of which are great and fairly cheap.

I've been really happy with the results of the lotion mask and my skin is feeling hydrated and smooth. I have very dry skin so this is a major plus for me. I also find that my other products seem to sink into my skin better as well.

I'be been using some of the massage techniques from Saeki's book and I can see my jaw line getting a little firmer, so all round this has been a great success.

I'm totally converted to this now and have made it part of my daily skincare routine. I also find that it is very relaxing as well.

By the way...I've tried different toners and lotions including Boots Oringinal Skin and La Mer's Tonic - both of which have worked well.

Hi Jules - Thanks for the great info and feedback. There is a Muji store in the USA (or maybe there is more than one now, I'm not sure?), but no stores in Canada, sadly. Crying or Very sad

Here is the link for USA/Canada online sales (and the cotton pads) -www.muji.us/store/health-and-beauty/care-products/cut-cotton-l.html . If the Muji US site offered better shipping charges to Canada, I wouldn't hesitate to place an order as their cotton pads really are a great price!

I popped into a Muji store last year when I was in the UK and absolutely loved it!!! Can't wait until they expand into Canada one of these days!

So what's the difference with this from the regular already packaged paper masks soaked with serum/ lotion? Confused

Hi Stardusty

I can only speak from my experience but I've found that my skin is so much more hydrated after using the mask and as someone who suffers from very dry skin that's a big plus.

I sometimes use another mask after the lotion mask and it is giving me better results....the lotion mask seems to prepare the skin for application of other products.

I only leave the lotion mask on for 3 minutes max and use a lotion without alcohol so it doesn't dry my skin out.

I guess it's all down to what works for you and what fits into your routine... I was very sceptical at first, I couldn't imagine what difference it would make but for me it works wonders! My skin is much more hydrated, smoother and glowing.

I also use the rest of Saeki's routine including the massage which has helped with firming my skin up especially around my jawline.

HTH

If anyone is looking for the cotton masks, I stumbled across these:

the shiseido cotton pads are softer and easier to pull apart. regular cotton from the store is kinda tough and does not look like it would absorb the lotion as easily.

I still have not decided on a lotion for this. It is very confusing. Can everyone share what lotion they are using and how they like it?

I've been using NARS hydrating lotion and like it a lot, but I'm sure one can find a cheaper alternative as long as it is a hydrating toner.
