I was told to use aloe vera after having IPL I bought a double strength one and used liberally and my face turned red it didn't hurt but stayed red for hours is this a bad reaction should I ask about an alternative thing to use maybe an oil.
Also been told to lay off the retin a which I haven't used for ages anyway but could I use rosehip seed oil. |

If I am not mistaken IPL usually causes redness for a while? |

your right it can, this was days later and the red was only where I had put the gel I could see it on my forehead where I'd missed bits, I'm only having the ipl on my cheeks.
I'd only had the patch test going tomorrow for the full treatment. |

I would discuss an alternative topical when you go tomorrow, just tell them that you seem to have a sensitivity to the gel they recommended!
I know there are other options that people have posted, but I don't want to advise what unless I come across a post by one of the members who has had IPL. |

Who told you you have to wash it off with soap? I sometimes apply aloe vera masks and I just wash it off with water and never had any similar effects to my skin you have described! |

The problem wasn't necessarily the aloe vera itself, what are the full ingredients of the gel you purchased? Is it made with inner leaf gel only? |

It says its organic aloe vera but after looking at the ingredients Aloe barbadenis leaf juice, Acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, Glyceryl caprylate, Sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, Aqua, Sodium phytate, sodium hydroxide
I'm not so sure guess I saw the organic and assumed it must be natural not sure what those other ingredients are but maybe they are the culprit. |

I asked because your reaction rang a bell - I had an immediate redness (erythema) and burning to an organic cleanser last year. This was completely unlike any reaction I have ever had before (prone to contact dermatitis) and there were no lasting effects. Checking reviews for the product I was not alone so I did some reading and it turns out sorbic acid, potassium sorbate, benzoic acid or sodium benzoate can cause this in susceptible individuals. This is the product I reacted to
"Water, Olive fruit oil*, Glycerine*, Cetearyl olivate, Cetyl alcohol, Xanthan gum, Sorbitan olivate, Alcohol denat.*, Citric acid, Sodium benzoate, Potassium sorbate, Limonene, Fragrance*, Pelagorniu graveolens flower oil*, Citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) oil*"
I also checked my other skincare products to see if these specific preservatives were in anything else I currently own, nope. They are both also used as food preservatives.
My notes say page 567 but I can't access that any more - there are references to the erythema in other sections tho if you search the chemical names.

Thanks Firefox that solves the mystery I know companies use these kind of preservatives for product longevity but I bought from a well known "natural health" store is it too much to ask for totally natural products! |

AFAIK there are few totally natural preservatives that are sufficiently active to preserve a water-based product for any length of time. You can add alcohol, make the product highly acidic or highly alkaline ... but none of those are skin friendly. Remember there are numerous compounds found in nature that are allergenic/ irritant/ toxic, so there is no guarantee that a 100% natural or organic product will be gentle. |

Okay, I am new here but this thread came up while doing a Google search on the water in Aloe Vera. I realize this thread is older and I may be too late. Anyhow, I work for a company that makes an aloe vera based cream formulated by a nurse that is sold as a moisturizer for the body including the face.
So I think I can answer to some concerns:
There are 400 species of Aloe Vera totally 2,200 types. The most potent is Aloe Barbandensis Miller. ( Miller being the botanist who named it and who believed it came from Barbados.) This is the kind of aloe used in many hospital burn units because it is the most potent as in having the most healing properties. For instance it has three natural analgesics and is naturally inflammatory among many other features.
Aloe Vera when used full strength works as an astringent. Astringents tend to shrink tissues or constrict body tissues. So the skin feels tight and a dry after use. I think this may have been what caused the tightening in drying as communicated by the first poster.
If one wants to use Aloe as a moisturizer the concentration has to be 80% strength and not over that amount. Again, this is based on information in my training working at this company. |

Garden of Wisdom has Aloe Vera Gel:
Aloe Vera Gel 99.9% Pure *Organic* / 4 oz
Ingredients: Certified organic aloe vera gel (99.5%), carrageenan less than 1% of the following natural, food grade sources: citric acid (oxidation inhibitor), potassium sorbate (mold inhibitor).
Our aloe vera gel is 99.9% pure and organic. The sap is 99.5% water. Considered one of the best emollients, demulcent, and contains sunscreen properties. The gel found in aloe vera's succulent leaves are a superior healing agent for the treatment of burns, inflammation and injuries. It is cooling, soothing and moisturizing while it stimulates the growth of new cells and tissue with steroids, enzymes and amino acids.
Keep refrigerated and make sure to use a microbial agent in your finished products to keep from spoiling.
Excellent for use in masks because it allows the mask to keep moist although still allowing it to dry. |

I only use aloe fresh from the plant, store bought stuff has given me allergies in the past. Yingey I would only recommend using aloe very sparingly on small areas as it is strong stuff and if you use it, straight from the plant. I find for aftersun if i mix straight from the plant with some almond or coconut oil I dont get the drying effect.
I am sure your skin will bounce back to normal! |

One of Aloe Vera's things to help with, is tighten skin and help with ageing and wrinkling of the skin.
(clearly you're getting that help)
If you are finding it uncomfortable, you could always try applying organic Shea butter and virgin coconut oil to
re-moisturize your skin.
Also try a bath with 3 drops of avocado essential oil it also helps with skin health I hope this helps.
Have a good day
Peace out |

It could be the citric acid or the high water content that is drying to your skin. For me coconut was better for healing a burn. Aloe seems to help then hinder. |
