I must have missed the "oil pulling" memo I've never even heard of this! How long did it take for you to look all dewy and sexed up? How does it work? You sound so excited, Tasha - please give more details!

HaHa I totally missed that memo too! This sounds kind of intense but when I get back home I am going to definitely do this. & just for the record it's off topic but I am just so amazed with this site! All this great beauty knowledge in one spot. I am learning so much, LOVIN IT!

The best part is once you get going you know what works and what doesn't. Then you are in a better place to pick and choose. Like Oil pulling. Wasn't a biggie here.
But worth a try! |

The part I don't get is the not swallowing. Even when the dentist puts the cast in your mouth, isn't it a natural human function to swallow. Can you swallow without the oil going down?

thought I'd resurrect this thread as it's a big recommendation from me.
I just started oil pulling 3 weeks ago now and my teeth went about 3 shades whiter , I have more energy and my dark circles are 70% better. Would probably be 100% better if I completely gave up sugar! ;p
I generally feel I look younger and combined with applying pure aloe vera gel to my face regularly it's more results than I've had with any other non- surgical treatments including copper peptides!
I use extra virgin unrefined organic coconut oil in case anyone wants to know - first thing every morning for 20 minutes- brilliant! |

I think I'm going to give this a shot as I've had a bad diet recently and have been suffering from low energy. I just feel and look dull right now! Did you have any detoxing from it? What exactly does the pulling do for the body? Thanks for resurrecting this! |

Just wanted to give this a big YAY from Canada. I've been doing it for about 4 weeks now. I'd never heard of such a thing, until I saw a reference about it from someone on here. Then Google and hey presto.
It works. My (much pampered and prepped and artificially shored up) skin looks great, my hair is softer and my teeth look very white.
I'm surprised it isn't more well known...I've been doing yoga for 30+ years and I had not heard of oil pulling. You think it would "spill" no pun....into the practice of yoga. |

ooooh I'm glad I resurrected the thread if it can be of help to anyone
as for detoxing Leigh I really think it has to do with what issues you have to begin with. I am generally in good shape with no real complaints so I think the main results have been with regards to oral health (since that's where the oil pulling starts) so better breath whiter cleaner teeth and then my eyes/dark circles which is in the vicinity .I did have a bit of eczema behind my ears which also has improved. I guess pulling toxins helps clear things up generally! Coupled with using fresh aloe vera on my skin overnight I feel like I've taken 5 or more years of my face
I guess maybe I have felt more energy too not sure since thats not really been an issue for me -initially I could swear I felt a lot happier but since my time of the month I'm still questioning that aspect
if you Google 'oil pulling' everyone has such distinctly different results from it and again I think that's from whatever issues you're starting with as to what you are treating. Overall it must definitely detox as that is the action of it but how it does it from person to person varies!I think it helps a lot for people with sinus congestion and headaches..
Hope that made sense and hope it works for you!
I use the organic extra virgin unrefined coconut oil. I like it best and most pleasant and I swear by coconut oil for everything! great as a skin moisturizer
Just a tip-- I would make sure you spit the oil into the toilet when you're done and flush right away. apparently so filled with toxins you don't want it touching or infecting your sinks! :/
here is a good little introductory article on the coconut site

I use safflower oil because it was the first thing that came to hand when I ran into the grocery store. It tastes harmless, of nothing really. I might try Olive Oil next time.
Now I don't recommend this...but I do my pulling in the car on the way to work (about a 25 min drive). I spit it out discreetly into the parking lot! LOL
I did tell my husband if I was ever in an accident and the coroner found the cause of death to be drowning - he'd have to explain. So far I've only gulped a little when I had to hit the brakes once unexpectedly! |

I also use coconut oil and have been oil pulling for years (tried a variety of oils). I heard about it on earthclinic.com. Sometimes I put a drop of peppermint essential oil in the coconut oil for a bit of variety and breath freshening. I haven't noticed much teeth whitening, unfortunately, but that may be due to the many cups of tea I drink . . . It's great for the gums, too, and is a nice, gentle form of facial exercise (all that swishing and moving the oil about). I think I have less plaque and what I do have seems easier to remove when I go for dental cleanings.
Love what you told your husband about "drowning" in case of accident, Willy von Whompers - heh, heh. |

I've pulled 4 times now, started the night before last and it definitely gives my mouth a clean feeling. The first night I pulled, I didn't wake up with morning breath! Bonus ...will post results in the future if there are any. |

Peppermint sounds nice as an addition, spearmint would also be nice.
Just DON'T use wintergreen EO in your mouth in case of ingestion, it is quite toxic! |

This sounds so interesting. How much oil do you use? And what is your process? Is it best to do it 20 minutes 1st thing in the morning? That would probably work best for me since I know my stomach will be empty. And it's okay to brush your teeth right after? |

Whilly Whompers... you made me laugh thinking of you oil pulling in the care, thanks for that!
I really like it. THe thing is, it is hard to do consistently. You really need 20 minutes of solid swishing (Not gargling) and it is quite the facial workout. I notice an improvement in my gums and whiter teeth.
Ryan A: I use sunflower seed oil - about a tablespoon or so. By the end of 20 minutes your mouth will be filled with saliva and the oil and it has quite a "foamy" consistency. THe first 2-3 minutes are the worst before the oil starts to break down. And, you should brush after when you are finished to remove the last of the toxins.
I just wish I could be more consistent! |

Thanks for the info, erg. I've been reading about it online, and it looks like people say that olive oil can stain your teeth. I guess I'll have to look for coconut oil or something. |

what an interesting method.. I will try this my self. I think i have some olive oil around here somewhere. Breaking it up with 10mins in the morning and 10 at night would probably be easiest for me anyway although i tend to snack often so i don't know if my stomach will be empty as directed. Does anyone know why you should do this on an empty stomach?.. |

Ketchup, I do not believe you will get the full benefit by breaking it up into two 10 minute chunks.
Traditionally, Indian tradition states that either sesame and sunflower oil be used because of their detoxifying qualities. |

I see thanks for the heads up.
Though i just did some reading on earthclinic i believe the site was and some say that you shouldn't do it to long as the toxins can be reabsorbed back into body. IM trying 10mins first. Right now i can tell you the first 2mins are the hardest!!
Oh and i have EVOO but its mixed with soybean oil.. i dont know if thats okay but its all i got at the moment. |

Thank you for resurrecting this thread, Pollyanna, I am very intrigued by this one. Sure, some say OP may not be worth it but that's okay, I can't see any harm in giving it a try so I am going to go ahead and do just that. I will keep everyone updated as to my results once I've given it a good go for a couple of weeks or so.
I have a question in regard to the gag reflex issue, though. After reading what others have said about it (here in this thread) I am still confused as to whether it is the actual "taste" of the oil in the mouth that causes the problem or the "swishing" of it in the mouth that creates the feeling of wanting to gag (I believe I read both views??). Being that the gag reflex comes from the back of the throat area, would it possibly help if one "leaned their head forward" during OP so that the oil couldn't reach the back of their throat (well, at least lessen the amount that reaches that area, anyway)?
I did read somewhere that using "mind-over-matter" techniques might help but I cannot verify their accuracy as I've never seriously tried them. One technique I recall is to fold your left hand into a fist, putting your left thumb INSIDE the fist, and squeeze as tightly as you can. Supposedly, this helps take your mind off of the gagging feeling you may encounter at times. However, this is actually one technique I "did" try but cannot say worked/works for me as I still gag all the same.
Has anyone else here tried any stop-gagging techniques and had success or...?
Ugh, just the thought of gagging makes me want to gag, lol. |

Speaking from my experience, I have never felt the gag reflex but the heaviness of the oil just feels weird. After about a minute or so (once it mixes with your saliva) there is no taste and it just feels like you are swishing around foamy water.
Remember... swish, never gargle! |

I have been OP-ing every morning with sesame oil since April. My teeth are much whiter, energy is increased, carpal tunnel pain non existent and I'm down 13lbs & 40points on my cholesterol without doing anything different other than oil pulling. I gotta think there's something to it. |

I've tried oil pulling a couple of times, and I can report that my teeth are much whiter. Oil seems to be able to remove the stain from tea pretty well. |
