"Blood injections (prolotherapy) have been used to heal damaged cartilage in joints for more than 20 years; last year, the FDA approved platelet-rich plasma shots (Selphyl, dubbed the “vampire face-lift” by excitable bloggers) to plump cheeks and minimize creases. “A small amount of your own blood is drawn, and the platelets and fibrin are separated and then injected back into the targeted zones, triggering collagen cells to regenerate,” Fusco says. Although the results aren’t as immediate as those of a filler (it takes about three weeks to see any plumping), the benefits can last up to a year and a half." |

Keliu- I was burned and had blistering on areas of my face where I was treated with a laser. My lips were also burned. I actually didn't know anything about PRP until my Dr. recommended it as part of my treatment. My skin has more moisture now and the pores are smaller (the burn had enlarged the pores on my cheeks). I didn't use PRP for anti-aging, I used it for healing my skin and healing/filling my lips (the burn had caused lines on my lips). I know I will continue to get PRP in my lips, at the least, it really smoothed them out and made them look and feel better.
P.S. - My treatment was under 1,000.00 but I know in the U.S., many plastic surgeons charge quite a bit more than that. |

Isn't this similar to Isolagen? That company went bankrupt and the results weren't as spectacular as other fillers already on the market but more expensive and difficult to use. |

No, it's slightly different. Isolagen uses the patients cultured cells - PRP uses the patients blood plasma.
This is what a doctor on realself.com has to say about PRP. Doesn't sound too hopeful.

I so love questions from the Realself.com community because it keeps me aware of all the crazy things out there.
Consider finding my Realself article on eyetight that talks about how to personally evaluate new technology.
PRP claims improvement in facial appearance with the injection of the patient's own plasma. Essentially, blood is drawn from you, spun and the plasma in injected under the skin with the implication that growth factors in this liquid stimulate rejuvenation. The problem with this great idea is there is no a shred of scientific evidence that it even remotely works. The before and after pictures of this procedure on various web sites are either very unimpressive, show patients who have clearly had other services, or have obvious manipulation of the lighting between the before and after images. If you want proven treatment stick with BOTOX and Restylane. If you want something that is unproven and most likely ineffective, try RPR. |

I've actually seen numerous peer-reviewed studies that support the efficacy of PRP. Unfortunately, EDS won't let me post them. |

Again, I had PRP for healing, not aging, purposes. I wouldn't recommend it for someone wanting a dramatic effect. I esp. love what it did for my lips. I can't imagine having anything unnatural like Botox or Restylane injected into my face... |

I've just come back from my consultation with the doctor. For my particular needs he's recommending I have PRP in my neck and Sculptra in my face. He said the Sculptra will give me more volume whereas the PRP will just improve skin texture. I told him I was terrified of getting Sculptra because I've read so many negative reports about it. But he said it is one of his favourite treatments and he has had excellent results with it - much better results than with the PRP. He showed me some photos and they were certainly impressive. He said he has never used PRP for lip treatment.
So I've bitten the bullet and am having the procedure on 13th December. |

Fantastic video - plus he's an Aussie!!
So as this doctor explains, PRP only rejuvenates the skin, it doesn't add volume. This is why my doctor is recommending Sculptra for my face - to add volume to address sagging. It will be interesting to note the different results when comparing my neck to my face - that's presuming I get some results! |

The reality is that I probably won't see any results from one treatment. But I'm going to keep on going until I do!
Here's an explanation of how Sculptra works and how long it lasts:

oh ok, so it's not a 'one off' treatment. Looks good though, like the idea it builds your own collegen. |

By coincidence, my daughter, who is living in Barcelona, rang me the other day and said she has also booked in to get Sculptra (which she doesn't need IMO). She said she went to get some Botox the other day and that the woman doing the injections looked absolutely amazing. My daughter said she was 55 but her skin was fabulous with no sagging at all. The clinician showed her the "before" photos in which her skin looked very aged. My daughter said the difference was incredible, so now she's booked in for the Sculptra. So now we'll be able to compare results - thank heavens for Skype! |

That place in AZ ended up being really, really expensive! Not going there.
I am trying to decided whether I will go to Utah for PRP from a very experienced injector or to a city closer to mine for Selphyl, which is PRFM -PRP with your own fibrin matrix. Decisions, decisions. The cost will be close because the injector in Utah is more reasonable but travel and lodging will add cost. |

Whirlee- The Dr. who did my PRP procedure said that PRP and Selphyl are basically the same thing and that one is no better than the other. I would go with whoever is the most experienced facial injector. |

Yes, I just really don't want to fly somewhere when I could just drive 3 hours and come back. Especially right before Christmas. What if my flight go cancelled? |

Thanks for the study. Did you notice this:
A study on post-menopausal women showed that topical estradiol treatment has provided a significant increase in hydroxyproline and collagen content of the skin.36 Another study on elderly men and women investigated the effect of topical estrogen on wound healing; the amount of collagen in the estrogen-treated group showed a constant increase in both genders compared to the placebo group.
Interesting - as I've been trialling Estriol cream. However, I've stopped using it at the moment because I thought it was breaking my face out. Maybe I'll try just applying some on my neck where I've had the PRP.
I had the PRP injections on Tuesday. The whole procedure was fine, not painful at all. My neck was a little red and had marks from the injection sites - but nothing of any consequence.
I don't expect to see any real results from one round of treatment though. I'm going back on the 2nd February for reassessment. I'm quite willing to have a few more treatments to see if I do eventually reap some results. |

Thanks for sharing your PRP experience, Keliu. I wish somebody did it in my area. I have a three hour drive just to get PRFM.
As for the hormone treatment, I am interested in Wiley protocol but, once again, nobody does it in my city and I'd have to travel about 3 hours! |

Yes, I went back for my second vile of PRP. However, by mistake the doctor put in two viles when I had only asked for one - so I refused to pay for the second vile. So then the nurses all said, aren't you lucky, you'll get a really good result now!
However, at this stage, I can't see any benefit at all from the treatments. My necks still looks as scraggy as it did beforehand.
At this point in time, I wouldn't recommend this treatment. But if I do get some improvement later on, I will let you all know. |
