The results ARE stunning and therein lies the problem. I described the change in my hair as "life-changing" so it is really, really difficult to decide not to have the treatment again. That said, I watched my dad die of lung cancer recently so it would be really hard to knowingly subject myself to large quantities of a known carcinogen. There reportedly was as much as 12% formaldehyde found in some of the Blowout solutions tested in Oregon. The upper safe limit is .2% (not a typo, that is 'point two' percent). I just don't get it... |

| I questioned my hair dresser. He said it was just the "Brazilian Blowout" brand that contained formaldehyde. He now uses a Coppola product. Does anyone know if there are any safe blowouts? |

There's the problem, if Salon owners and stylists are being misinformed how does a consumer hope to know? |

Just wanted to post my experience with the brazilian blowout...
I love it!
My hair is pretty straight and manageable to begin with, but the treatment just launched my hair into salon-perfect-all-the-time.
my hair is shiny, bouncy, manageable, and lustrous. my sister owns a salon and has been trying to get me to do this for ages. since i have slightly wavy hair (only with a slight frizz in the back), i thought it seemed excessive and unnecessary. but she decided only to flat iron my hair *once* instead of the recommended 4 times during the treatment, so i get all the benefits of really manageable hair without the super-straight-no-volume look. for those who just want unfrizzy, lustrous hair, i recommend this "light: version of the treatment. Also, I have bangs and she does not flat iron my bangs at all.

My sister tried this and didn't think it was as good as the Yuko.
I had my 7th Yuko treatment yesterday (I do it roughly every 10 months or so), and I think £250 is well worth nearly a year of great looking hair. |

| I questioned my hairdresser again since he was wanting me to get the treatment. I asked if he was worried about his health. He was not concerned, said it was safe and the new studies proved it safe. I wonder. You see, I am very allergic to formaldehyde and I had no reaction to the Blowout treatment. Believe me, my skin is sensitive! No fumes bothered me. Dying my hair gets more reaction. I'm going to do it again for the summer. It's like the million premature studies released. Liquor is bad, liquor is good, etc. Who are we to believe? A bag of Doritos is probably more dangerous to me than a Brazilian Blowout! |

"Testing conducted by Health Canada found that the Brazilian Blowout Solution contains 12% formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is permitted in cosmetics at less than 0.2% when used as a preservative. Formaldehyde is a known irritant, sensitizer, and is linked to cancer in humans when inhaled chronically over a long period of time. Health Canada believes that the reactions are being caused by formaldehyde becoming aerosolized during the blow drying and flat ironing stages of the treatment. Any procedure containing formaldehyde above the allowable limits places clients and stylists at increased risk." |

| My hairdresser pointed out that the BB contains "aldehyde" a bit different from Formaldehyde. If it is dangerous why has it not been banned in Canada and U.S.? Sometimes these studies jump the gun. I do appreciate the information. If anyone knows of further studies please post. Not sure on who to believe. |

As someone else mentioned, as long as the shampoo and conditioner are sulfate free your hair will be fine.
I know that Phyto's hair products will help prolong the life of your blowout (they are not technically sulfate free but the kind they use is a natural coconut derivative and SAFE for BBs but NOT for Japanese straightening treatments) and you can buy them at Sephora or Ricky's (if you live in NYC)to name a few. |

Lemon - can you expand on this? I use Phyto, it is my staple hair product, and I have been having Yuko Japanese straightening for years now. I haven't noticed anything adverse... (yet!) - what is it about Phyto that is not suitable for Yuko? |

My apologies, I should have specified. Phyto products are safe for hair treated with Japanese straightening EXCEPT for any products in their "ultra-dry" line. The ingredients do not mix well with the treatment and your hair will break off. This is information that was given to me by a Phyto brand rep.
But they are all safe for Brazilian Blowouts and help promote the treatment's longevity. |

I had this treatment done 3 months ago. I have long hair and was excited at the prospect at not having any frizzyness. My hairdresser is absolutely wonderful and has always been super careful with my hair and she was on the fence about it because I have bra-line length hair, and when hair is that long it's just much more fragile.
I decided to go ahead and do it. At first it was wonderful - the first month was great. Then, oh gee... I could really start to see some permanent damage. My hair started to feel and look very coarse. All the work that was done to help my long hair be healthy and strong was literally gone overnight. It's quality is just not nearly what it was before. It "feels" rough and coarse. It looks damaged. I would never, ever, ever get this done again. I regret it terribly. If I had short/shoulder length hair, I probably would. But when hair gets towards your waist, it's several years old and really is quite fragile. This treatment really did some serious damage.
Would absolutely NOT recommend for long hair. |

I don't know about the BB, but I've been having Yuko for many years on my shoulder length hair, and my hair stays smooth, silky and shiny with minimal damage. I know some people don't like Yuko, because it makes your hair too flat, but my guy only irons about 1cm from the root, so I always have a little bit of body on my scalp. I love it most from 2 weeks after treatment.
I decided against BB because it doesn't last as long as Yuko, and you have to be more careful - with Yuko, after babying your hair for the first two weeks, you can go back to normal life. |

| I recently had the equivalent of a BB at an Aveda salon. They call it a Keratin Complex Therapy and it is a safe alternative. A bottle of Keratin care shampoo & conditioner was included. |

| I just purchased the Global Keratin system to try out. 2% formaldehyde I think it said. With these products you need lots of ventilation. I want to give my hair a head start on combatting the "frizzy season". My hair sucks up humidity..... |

Hello everyone
I am a hairdresser in France, I used the first version of BBO was a good product with very good results, given the controversy I stopped,
I then ordered the BBO ZERO since they announced the same results as the BBO 1,
This is completely FALSE,
the product is unpleasant to use, it leaves hair greasy and sticky, for the result it does not there, NOTHING .. more hair is dull and as if they were dry ... the product feels straightening due to sodium hydroxide in it ...
I'll get all the forums to alert States of this scam because I am disgusted by this company, in fact I sent several emails for explanations and that I shall, 1 Litre of BBO ZERO cost me $ 530 (postage and VAT included) so when I think this product and unusable and that the more they do not respond to my emails I am extremely angry .....
but my anger does not diminish the fact that BBO is a scam with ZERO false advertising !!!!!!!

| Its funny because lately im noticing a lot of brazilian this hair, brazilian that hair, brazilian yadayada shampoo etc. etc. BUT.. I am Brazilian, and in Brazil WE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THESE EXPENSIVE PRODUCTS!! And most of the time, its rubbish.. Yes, brazilian women have beautiful hair but do you know why? Because almost at every corner of the street they have 3-level hairshops that only sell cheap but natural things (you can find any natural healthy thing local in Brazil). Also, in Brazil, vitamin treatments for your hair are also VERY popular but these are NOT expensive.. Most of the times the 'Brazilian ... products' dont even have anything to do with Brazil.. All these 'westernized' Brazilian hairproducts or styling stuff, whatever it is, PLEASE don't fall for it! |

Most BKT or blowout treatments are a huge risk. Google BKT and Oprah forum to see all of the people with damage from Keratin treatments. So sad, and many gorgeous girls are near bald post treatment.
If you need protein in your hair, just use the Apoghee 2 step, very affordable and you wont lose your hair.
