Ahh, that's actually more like what I have. It's not true hairs per se (like leg or arm hair). It's a lot finer but I notice that the area is lighter when I shave. That's also why I don't do it too often - just when I notice if my face seems "darker". |
Stop it! You're pushing me over the edge to try this! |

No, no, no!!! Just didn't want to give the impression that I have a moustache going on.
Really - if you haven't felt the need to shave - there's really no sense doing it. Believe me, I wouldn't if I didn't have to. It was so embarrassing last year when my mom asked if I shaved and gave me the small Asian razor ... in front of my husband! He never knew and gave me this 'what the hell are you doing now?' look. |

I don't have any hair at all on my face, so I don't NEED to shave, but I do hear it's really great exfoliation. Just wondering....I have alot of red acne scars on my face (no pits) Do you think it would get rid of those? |

After reading through these posts, I took the plunge and shaved my face this morning. I was surprised at how much hair showed up on the razor! My hair was all over my face-- cheeks, chin, forehead-- but it was fairly fine and light so you could only see it if you were up close. It still bothered me, so I went ahead and shaved. I can feel the stubble. It's not rough because the hairs were fine, but there's a texture to it. My skin looks more clear. I haven't put on make-up yet. You have to be careful around acne. I broke a bit of skin around one pimple. |

For the past few years I have been using a Braun Silk epil epilater to remove hair from my body and face. Recently I purchased the latest model and it comes with a special attachment for the face which makes life much easier - plus it doesn't hurt as much. Hair regrowth appears much slower and sparser. |

i'm a big epilator fan, too.
it's my hair removal method of choice.
i tried this other product once that was sort of a shaver.
used it on my upper lip.
felt smooth initially, but the next day i felt a bit of a subtle stubble.
so in my case, i would NOT shave. |

To the ladies using the epilators, what is the best way to use it on the face? I don't have dark hair but the peach fuzz is extremely long around my sideburn area and I would love to find the best way to remove it. Do you trim the hair before epilating?
bubbleoffplumb - which epilator do you use for the face? |

I'm really thinking about getting an epilator also, waxing is fine, just hate the down time between sessions. Which one do you girls recommend. I hear Braun's pretty good. |

The only way to find out is to do it!
Seriously though it probably would help alot. I would only do it once a week and be careful around (or avoid) any active breakouts. I noticed an overall lightening of any old, red acne marks when I did it. |

FYI I thought I saw that Ulta online had a shaver very similar to the blade that is used for the original Biomedic peel in which they dermaplane the face prior to applying the peel.

im really scared to go down the road of shaving my face i have to say. i have darkish hairs at the side and on my upper lip. i elipated there once but it felt weird after when the breeze passed over it. then when it grew back it was darker as i have dark hair and what i took off was maybe bleached naturally by the sun a little i guess. i am surprised there are so many women out there shaving and it almost makes me wanna try |

for my face i usally grab the silk-epil by braun.
it's a slender battery operated unit made specifially for the face.
I couldn't find the exact product in a quick search (purchased this years ago), but it's similar to this one:
http://www.folica.com/Epil_Touch_Faci_d370.html
for body I love the emjoi products
I have this one:
http://www.folica.com/Emjoi_Gently_Go_d213.html
and then purchased this one when I thought I'd left the other behind while vacationing
(I was NOT about to go back to shaving!!):
http://www.folica.com/Emjoi_Optima_Du_d320.html
I may try one of the emjoi's on my face to see what it's like.
they are bulkier, but they're also stronger (both are plug ins).
I do not trim first, but that may not be a bad idea for first timers with longer hairs.
it's pretty easy to do touch ups - i don't have to wait for the hairs to get a certain length,
and if there is a hair or two that doesn't "give-it-up" too easy, I pluck that bad-boy!
I must mention....
it is NOT painless (particularly for beginners).
certain areas are more senstive than others.
i think the facial area with most sensitivity would be ones upper lip/mustache area.
the rest of the face would be a "breeze".
I do find, and others that have used epilators would probably agree,
that with use over time areas that were once sensitive are relatively pain-free. |

I've been spending too much money since I started browsing through these forums! Fun for me, not fun for my bank account
I never knew about the epilators before. I bought the Braun one, not for the face though. I got the one from drugstore.com and I guess it's for the body. I might try it on the face just to see if it will work. |

Are you kidding? I'm middle eastern with facial hair. From the ages of 15 to my early 30's (not regularly) I went for electrolysis. I wish I could. I think that is why men age better than women, but I can't handle the hairy face. |

Hasn't anyone heard of Vaniqua, a px cream that discourages hair growth? you still have to remove the hair by whatever means, but they grow back much more slowly and finer. I've been using it for years--it's a miracle! Also, I use an epilator on my arms and legs, also underarms. It hurts a lot the first time, but then if you do it every few days, it hardly hurts because the hair grows back unevenly. Silk-Epil is the best one. |

I'm kind of confused here...
I was under the impression that the entire reason this thread was proposed was in order to extol the virtues of shaving as a means of exfoliation ... not hair removal!
And then subsequent concerns were raised about the grow-back process of the hair that is inevitably on one's face at the time of shaving...
This is how hair got involved!
Moral of the story, as gleaned from various posters: shave it off, either way, and it won't grow back thicker?

The Braun epilator works great--however it's not a form of electolysis. It works by pulling a lot of hair out by the roots, and you keep going over the area--like shaving. |

Nope. Can't actually say I've ever even thought about it! All my hair (and I do mean ALL!) seems to be on top of my head and "down there" My best friend in hs accused me of shaving my forearms b/c I have very light, short and minimal hair there and hers was about two inches long |

Hi Tosca,
The model I have is the Braun Silk-epil Xelle 5580 - it comes with a few attachments, one of which is especially for epilating your face. It has a narrower head with a kind of shield that fits on top of it. It doesn't seem to "tug" at the skin so much, so it is much less painful than using the normal head on the upper lip.
re TAMgirl99's question - I only have peach fuzz but it is also long around my sideburns. I don't trim the hair beforehand but I would really recommend using a model with a face attachment.
I also believe that running the epilator over the face has an exfoliating affect. |

Okay -- I caved, and shaved, yesterday.
Don't know what was holding me back. I've already tried my Emjoi epilator on my face (owww!) and used Nair depilatory cream (burned, oozing skin), waxing and threading (both high on the pain scale), so what's the diff?
Gotta say shaving makes my skin feel really smooth and helps get rid of the flakes, longish fine hair all over my face, a dainty little moustach and a few "billy goat" chin whoppers. Make-up glides on beautifully and towel fluff no longer gets stuck in tufts on my face.
I've never had any regrowth come back coarser or fuller with other methods and don't anticipate any problems with shaving. BTW, I did a dry shave with a pink BIC. |

Thanks, Keliu. This is moving up very quickly on my list of products I'm really lemming and will absolutely die if I don't have. |

Ok...now that a lot of you have taken the plunge and ran the razor across your face, do it regularly to get the full (exfoliation) benefit. In the years to come, you will really see the payoff, especially if you start early enough. Don't forget your crows feet and forehead. Remember, this isn't about removing hair and if you are hairy, it may not be a good idea. The sides of my face (sideburns) were peach fuzzy, so I avoided that area and waxed it a number of times before I started shaving that area. Don't panic if you feel some "stubble" above your upper lip with your tongue. You are the only one that will feel that and its not an indication you are growing anything more there than you had to start. One other tip, my dermatologist suggests always shaving in a downward direction, not up. He recommended starting at the nose and shaving outward. Hope this helps. |

Ok...check me out. Here is a photo of me taken within the last year. Don't be scared, as it is a picture of me having acupuncture for my sinuses on my acupuncturist website. Yes, I'm horizontal, so gravity is helping me in the photo. I am 54. (click on link or cut and paste.)

I think you are beautiful but I had a hard time looking at your picture for long because I can't stand needles!
Don't make holes in your face with needles. That is my 2 cents. |
