What's the best way to clean good-quality, natural hair makeup brushes? Mine are from Jane Iredale.
I mainly use them for the mineral makeup from Jane, and some Dr. Hauschka powder makeup.
The large brush I use for foundation (the "Handi") especially gets big balls of mineral build-up (maybe from the oils/moisturizer on my skin?) and no amount of soap and water seems to break that down. Most of the other brushes just have some rouge powder, eyeshadow, or the like on them.
I think it would be good to clean them more frequently, which I'll do soon as I find the method.
I ordered a brush cleaner form Jane Iredale and it STINKS, so I'm not willing to use it. |

I love the mac brush cleaner. I use that daily, to clean a brush in a hurry. Then, every few weeks, I swish the brushes in a gentle generic baby shampoo, do this a few times, then swish them in clear water, rinse them, and let them dry. |

How often do you clean brushes? How often are you supposed to? Do they dry well? Where do you put them to dry and how fast do they dry? |

My SA at MAC told me once a week if you use them daily; once a month if you don't use them that often.
I am a 'less often' gal I do mine w/a gentle soap or shampoo, and lay them to dry on a paper towel |

I also use the MAC brush cleaner. I don't notice a smell with this and it really takes all the GUNK out of my brushes and I'm VERY lazy when it comes to brush cleaning. I tried soap/shampoo before and it just doesn't compare to the brush cleaner. My brushes are much softer after cleansing as well! |

A beautician told me any shampoo will do the job, but maybe J&J works the best. |

A MAC sales associate told me their brush cleaner is good...but I use J&J baby shampoo. Its cheap and I already have a small child so there's always plenty around. Getting time to actually clean the brushes is another story... |

I also use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo to clean my brushes. I have a kabuki from Aromaleigh, which also gets the balls of MMU (which I assume is caused by moisturizer and s/s). Just swishing the brush and rinsing it does not get these out. I run the brush over a wet washcloth very thorougly to get all the little bits out. |

I also use Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo.
I wash the brushes that I use every day about once a month or once every 2 months, depending on how lazy I am at the time. |

Lately I've been using Cover FX brush cleaner. It has tea tree oil which helps disinfect. Works great & the price is very reasonable! |

I have a question about cleaning brushes. I have a set of BE brushes but the first time I washed them, the hairs started coming off (I used Caudalie foaming cleanser). I don't understand! Is it the quality of the brush? Because I've been washing one of my other brushes I bought frequently and not one hair came off. I returned the BE brushes to Sephora and they gave me a new set. Now I'm afraid to wash them out again ( I haven't touched them in months...). Any suggestions? |

Yep, a clear shampoo works well.
Here's a little tip online, being a new member, I can't post the link, so here it is:
How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
Cleaning your makeup brushes is easy.
1. Shampoo your brush by gently lathering in a small amount of your favorite shampoo with your fingers.
2. Rinse your brush thoroughly under running water.
3. Repeat the process until there is no visible makeup in the brush and the water runs clear.
4. Dry your brush by running the bristles across a clean dry towel in a uniform direction. This will help bring the brush back to its proper shape.
Then lay your brush out on the towel overnight to dry.
Your brushes will be ready for use in the morning!
For best results, we recommend cleaning your makeup brushes every 2 weeks - or more often depending on usage. |

If hairs start coming off it means the quality of your brushes are bad.
Also a word of advice: DO NOT buy the cheap brush sets from MAC that go on promotion during Xmas because they are of a different quality than the usual MAC brushes. The sets will shed brush hair and they are ALL made in China, they are much more coarse as well. The original price individual MAC brushes are either made in Frace/Japan and the brushes DO NOT shed and are of much higher quality. |

I would suggest a mild cleanser or shampoo. Anything to get the gunk out of them. I clean mine about 2-3 times a month, dry them on a towel and let them dry overnight. Avoid harshly scrubbing at them for they will shed their hairs...I stroke mine back and forth and let the water rinse the remaining residue out. |

I clean my JI Handi brush using my own shampoo, and then I have been known to blow dry it. I find that it doesn't completely dry if I leave it out over night, so I help it along a bit. The bristles tend to be a bit more flared at first, but they settle back down after a few days. (Possibly not the method to follow) |

I clean my brushes very gently with a mild shampoo. Some brushes, you only need to clean the tips. This also makes them try faster if they're not soaked to the base. I squeeze the water out with a paper towels, and then (this is important) give them a good shake or two. A lot of water slides off the brush and separates the bristles. Gently reshape the bristles with your fingers and dry them on a towel, but with the ends over the edge, so the air can circulate around the brush. |

I don't wash my brushes very often as I don't use them every day. Previously I used my cleanser to wash it (decleor), but I found it not so good as brushes are still greasey afterwards. I've then changed to using dish washing ditergent and it works wonders. |
