Hi,
what is the "typical" or "normal" age to get gray hair?
I'm freaking out because I noticed 2 silver-ish hairs, and I'm only 27. What could be causing this? I recently switched shampoos, could that be the reason?
I eat well generally, but recently lost quite a bit of weight (6 lbs over 3 months, which for me was about 5% of my total body weight). Could this be related to graying hair?
I feel very helpless. Can this be reversed?? I don't want to age |

I've always thought it was genetics. My dad started to go gray in his 20s, and my sister did too. She was about 24 when she noticed it (she doesn't even color hers anymore; she says she rather have keep it healthy, naturally). My mom still has not gone gray, except for a few strays, and I'm 24 and have not noticed gray.
My bf is 32 and has sprouted a few on his temples. I don't mention them, though.
I think the only way to reverse it is having an appt with Miss Clairol. |

Violetanne,
I'm even more upset, because my husband is 37 and he has dark hair and only about 7-10 gray hairs!! |

I think this REALLY varies from person to person, and yes, has everything to do with genetics.
I have a friend who was half-gray by the age of 24. She decided not to dye it, and it actually looked kinda cool on her -- sort of artsy.
I'm 25 and have definitely noticed a few gray/white strands creeping there. Also my once dirty blond hair has definitely lost whatever natural blond is once had and has darkened to full-out brown. I now use lemon to lighten it occasionally.
I don't think you need to freak about finding some grays -- it's natural for some at your age. If it really bothers you, it's pretty easy to dye. |

Thanks Janis
I'm too, a natural blond (more warm-toned than ash/netural), and my hair is definitely getting darker. I used to look like a bleached blond naturally.
I've tried lemon and chamomile infusion to lighten hair a few times, but it seems that I get this weird residue afterwards and when I dry my hair is literally smokes after a rinse like that. How do you use lemon to lighten your hair? |

Just buy a lemon, squeeze some juice out, streak some in your wet hair, and then go out in the sun to dry (that last element is crucial).
It just gets me a little lighter, it's not a big deal. Not that different than Sun-In, although in my opinion a little less brassy. Sun-In always made me kind of orangey -- I don't recommend it.
I'm actually considering just going for highlights, just wary about a few details:
a) everyone does it, and it's just BORING at this point, b) not so fond of that "racoon stripe" look I see on some girls c) the time/money it takes.
My brown is definitely a mousy brown, though, so it needs something. |

I used Clairol's "Touch of Sun" but my hair smells like peroxide for a week afterwards and I think it actually dried it out and made it more brittle, and temporarily makes hair to fall out.
I'll try just the lemon alone.
(Lemon and chamomile effect was brassy, too, by the way.) |

Ahhhh! Don't stress. I started going grey at 18!!! I am 30 now and I have TONS of grey hair. I don't really associate it with age because I started so young but it is a thorn in my side. I would NOT suggest dying your hair just for a few greys but you could try the john frieda (sp) color glazes....I have dark hair so the brown one keeps my roots away until my next appointment...and it washes in and out so its not permanant. Also it gives your hair some shine. As far as causes....if you figure that out let ME know. I would love to stop them! |

it's definitely genetic. i'm six years younger than my brother a he has maybe two white hairs whereas i take after my father and have a ton of them and some really heavy cruella deville streaks. the best thing to do if you decide to go for the dye is to use a semi-permanent colour. much less damaging and the grays tend to just look like natural highlights. (BTW, recommend Klorane's Cammomile shampoo for bringing out blond highlights. it's gentle, but definitely lightens the hair.)
on a weird but true note, i've been taking HA tablets for my lips and eyes and knees and it seems to have *decreased* my gray hairs.... |

And isn't HA anti-aging/"youth" stimulating? Yes, so I think grey hair does have to do with aging but maybe not with total overall aging, just something is no longer being produced by the body or is being produced slower.
I'm going to try HA pills, just hope my face won't change. Sorry, can't remember who it was, but someone recently posted on EDS that when they were taking HA, something shifted or changed in their face, like - fat distribution around cheeks or something? La Vie en Rose, do you find it does that - plump up more than just lips, but also other face parts? |

I have started noticing some gray hairs, and was hoping no one else will notice it too. It just reminds me that I am getting older...mm.
Thanks for the tip la vie en rose - I will start taking the HA pills once again. |

Have you tried Shoppers Drug Mart? Not sure whether they have it though - I have seen it somewhere! |

ummmmmmm, my face is naturally plump unless i'm seriously underweight (which i'm not). i really don't feel it alters the face at all -- though HA does seem to up water retention, so if you have a problem with that, it could plump the face a bit i suppose. the only kind of weird alterations i had was at the very beginning. as my lips were plumping back to their original glory, it was a bit like a seedling breaking ground. the skin surrounding my lips looked out of place and annoyed. it didn't last long, but i was a bit put off when this happened. however, been on it for a few months faithfully and my lips look gorgeous and the surrounding area is back to norm. as far as the gray hairs, it's only been in the last few weeks that i've noticed this reduction(i do my own hair whilst in paris) so it was obviously the *last* thing the HA tablets affected (the first was actually my eyes). i'm really bad about taking supplements and vitamins as i've meds to deal with it and i get cranky keeping track of everything. i will not, however, ever be without HA again, vanity aside, if only because it's made my knees soooo much better.... i think people expect beauty miracles on this and lips like angelina. doesn't happen. it does, however, give you back the lips you were born with and fixes various insufficiencies in the body in time. patience is the key and you know how many of us on the board want the instant WOW factor. |

I am almost certain that it's genetic. My father was white by the time he was 24, I started to notice a few white, not grey, hairs when I was 16/17. I am now 27 and they are really showing through. If I had lighter hair I wouldn't mind so much but I have almost, naturally black hair and if you look at me from above it looks like someone poured salt on my hair, the contrast is that much. I have come to the conclusion to wear higher heels so people can't look at the top of my head!! |

My boss had a complete head of grey hair when he turned 20. His father and brother same thing. Baldness also heredity. I have noticed with myself, although I have no grey hairs in my head (37 years of age), but I do sprout one in my eye brows (right side). I pluck it and a month or so later, there she is again. It is really course. Strange. My mom is 56 and has had two grey hairs keep sprouting. She plucks them from her head as well. I am hoping the genes continue. I guess I really don't have stress associated with grey hair, since women can dye there hair and it is just the thing to do. Men on the other hand can, but I can ususally tell when men do, and I am not a fan of men with dyed hair. I like grey hair men, they look handsome. |

I got my first grey hairs a few months ago and I am 32. I called my mom and told her, she told me I was lucky as she found her first greys when she was 21! I wonder if it had anything to do with stress as I was having a stressful time worrying about work those few months before they popped up.
I would suggest you don't worry sooooo much about aging as it is inevitable, it is part of life...don't stress, it adds to your character!! |

I think I found my first when I was around 33ish. At first I freaked out and would pluck them out when I saw them (luckily it was only the odd strand or I'd have gone bald!), and since then I might have a couple more but nothing major. I highlight my hair now so you can't notice them as much as when I did a full colour and could see them easily in the regrowth area. |

My hair is the most "blessed" part of my body. I noticed my 1st gray hair when I was 45 and at age 47 I have less than 10, well maybe 20 gray hair. |

I noticed my first few gray hairs about 2 months ago. I'm 32 and I have been going through a VERY stressful divorce. The stress began about 7 months ago and I noticed that the gray hairs I pulled out are half dark brown and half gray, so they started turning gray right after my "emotional breakdown". I've pulled out about 5 since then. I started taking some amino acids and a multivitamin called "Hair" after someone recommended them to me. Supposedly her mother had good results by taking them for hair loss and gray hair. |

I had my first few grey hairs when i was 16 - i started pulling them out and when i started to dye them - they grew fast and too many.
Now i have to dye my hair every week because they show about 1 cm in length every 7 days - i hate it.
Whereas my sister who is much older than myself (over 40) - she still does not have any grey hair.
I am still waiting for the easy hair dye that is as easy as 'wash n go'
