Hello, ladies! I'm a newbie here but I've been fascinated with all of the recipes for products and can't wait to try some of them. I am a light skinned black woman who suffers from age spots and other discolorations on my face. Some of these have come from sun exposure in earlier days (I'm 27) and some have come from acne. I used Proactiv Solution to control acne and found out (too late, I think) that I shouldn't have been using it. I think the BP damaged my face and need help getting rid of the discolorations. I have tried numerous bleaching creams and home remedies with apple cider vinegar. Right now I'm using:

oil cleansing method (castor, coconut, olive)
Head and Shoulders shampoo
Apple cider vinegar toner with aspirin
Lumitone HP (trying to use up)
Sunscreen SPF 30
Amlactin (at night)

Any help you ladies can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hi PhaiG!

You use Head & Shoulders on your face? What is it supposed to do?

Hi! I got the idea of using Head and Shoulders on my face from an acne board. The reason I use it is because of the zinc it contains. I can't spell the "p" word that follows zinc in the list of ingredients, but I've seen this tip on numerous boards. I decided to try it myself and it has been working ever since. I moisturize and tone really well after cleansing and my skin is soft. I don't have any active acne at all; just the spots from the discoloration. I've tried numerous peels and microdermabrasion kits and have considered something stronger, but I'm scared. I'm going to purchase Avon's new peel and see how it goes. It's supposed to be "superior" (word they used in their description) to a 35% glycolic peel. We'll see.

Gottcha. Are your spots darker or lighter than your skin? I'm using the Obagi Nu-Derm system, it's supposed to even out your skin and increase cell turnover. I haven't been on it long, but I really like it so far. Another thing I've used to lighten dark spots (mainly acne scars) is a green apple peel, it's pretty strong, but I don't know if it's anywhere near the glycolic peel you mentioned.

Heya

I did a lot of damage to my skin when I used darn Clearasil pimple creams.. SOOO speaking from experience and regret...

Well I have really learned the hard way.. If you do want to heal your skin and avoid long term damage (like thickened skin etc), not just recover and look good for the moment, then go for natural and gentle ways to get rid of scars and discolouration. I used to scrub my skin vigorously after I had a flare up, thinking I could scrub away the 'bad skin'.. man 3 years down the track, I really regret doing that!

If you use a peel, follow up with natural rosehip oil to help with healing, scarring and cell renewal. I am really a cynic when it comes to fancy post-peel healing creams, because if it doesn't work the first time, it can really detriment skin healing.

You might google MaMa Lotion. It's supposed to great for discolorations and it's not extremely harsh on you skin. I use it on a scar and a little melasma area and it does work.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I've tried the MaMa lotion before and I liked it a lot--had forgotten all about that! And Miranets, you were right. I went to Wal-Mart today and almost bought one of those exfoliating brushes and stopped when I thought about how damaged my skin already is. I'll have to get some rose hip seed oil. My sushi secret, are you using the Juice Beauty green apple peel? I've read a lot of good reviews about that one. And my spots are darker than my skin. I have some brown spots and some brown patches on my face that have been there since I stopped using Proactiv. My stepmother says there's nothing I can do for my skin but I am determined to prove her wrong. The Head and Shoulders really does work for my skin. I scoffed at the idea when I first read about it, but I haven't had a pimple since I started using it. I'll stick with it for now. Again, thanks so much for all of your advice and I hope that I can be as helpful to you all as you have been to me. I'll keep you posted on how everything goes and let you know about that Avon peel once I try it.

Was your skin pretty bad before, or did it just break out occasionally?

Wow! You can see the difference right away with the Juice Beauty peel? I just ordered that Avon peel. Shoot. Surprised But yes, my skin was pretty bad before. I tried everything--Murad, Proactiv, Neutrogena, Clearasil, Oxy--and many other brands and remedies. I hate that I used the Proactiv at all. I already had terrible acne and the brown and red marks from the previous acne marks combined with acne didn't leave me feeling that great about myself. And I hated covering up under a lot of heavy, greasy makeup. Doing a lot of research on the Net and trying different remedies helped me to come up with the regimen I have now. I just found out about the oil cleansing method a month ago and had I known about it before, I could have been using it! I'm going to be in my sister's wedding in September and I have to get myself in shape by then. Maybe I'll get the JB peel and give the Avon one to my mom--she ordered one too.
